FANTASTIC news! I got total funding approval for the HACC trucking school! I start in several weeks. Thank you for all your input.

However, a trucker I know said that I'll most likely make only $30k gross my first year and that "Old Dominion is nothing but a stepping stone and that some stay but most leave."

When I asked him what did he consider to be good carriers, he said, "Hard to say, the one I'm at is very good, but it is hit and miss. The best thing is to talk to drivers at a company you are considering; most of the companies I would choose are road carriers."

He also said, "You can actually have two full time jobs and work local and make the same money average money that you can make trucking with still having a personal life."

This is very discouraging and does not line up with a lot of things many truckers say on other forums and on this forum, nor does it line up with what hiring managers (not recruiters) have told me in interviews, what the school director has said (not school recruiter), what truckers have told me, and many other things I've read.

I have done TONS of research in this forum, have interviewed with carriers, have talked with drivers, have emailed with drivers, have read information from other sources, have studied the local job listings (I currently hold a Class B license and can get a B driving job in my area making $44,2k - $50k, and I have very carefully weighed my options.

What do you think? Thanks again!

You can go to any truck stop coffee counter and hear the same story. Ignore what he says. Old Dominion is an excellent company if you go linehaul. Old Dominion isn't a stepping stone; it' a company to make a career with. I'm pretty sure the turnover at Old Dominion is with the P&D division because it's fast paced plus lots of city driving with many pickups and deliveries every day.
There's plenty of companies that run long haul where new drivers make over $50K the first year.

Its true. I made around 30k my first year, and 37k my second year. Was working for TransAm, and now with Cargo Transporters out of Claremont NC. I expect 50-52k in year this year as my base pay has gone from 32cpm to 43cpm. Don't be discouraged. You gotta start somewhere, Jen. Once you get some experience (a year at your FIRST company), the better companies (read higher pay) will take you and your app much more seriously. I truly enjoy what I do. I love the travel and the vagabond lifestyle that comes with it and meeting new people. If its what you wanna do, enjoy the ride. I am hoping to one day getting one of those 82k jobs Walmart advertises. But for the meantime, learn how to drive the truck, learn the industry and hope you have the patience to endure wait times at shippers and receivers as they can be lengthy. Being on time for your deliveries IS A REALLY BIG DEAL. I was once 90 minutes late for a delivery at the Walmart DC in Monroe GA on a Friday afternoon due to Atlanta traffic. Got unloaded Sunday evening with no detention pay. I was late, my fault for not trip planning better and accounting for the rush hour traffic. Still, its been a learning experience and a great one at that. This is definitely a one of a kind career, but to me, its a Godsend, Salvation, and a Deliverance. I truly believe getting into trucking was the best decision I have made in my adult life and it started in the summer of 2013. I will be 55 in September. Best job I ever had. I wish you all the best.

I've been told by drivers that some carriers will randomly call drivers while the driver is driving down the road and tell them to report to the next truck stop where they'll meet with a designated person who is authorized to administer a drug test, which I'm sure contributes to turnover as well. I'm alcohol and drug free, so no problem there.

There is no doubt that you could, through a series of misfortunes and bad decisions, only make 30k your first year but I wouldn't count on it. You are doing your research, you will be fine.

Hmm, that's interesting, because a bus driver I worked with said his nephew who was a driver told him this. Perhaps the nephew was BSing?

I'm telling you, I really appreciate this forum, and I CANNOT wait to hit the high road!!! I told my sister who holds a Class A what I've been up to, and she mentioned team driving. She read my mind! Lol
