All I know is I don't have a problem working hard, and I DEFINITELY don't have a problem working hard if I'm being compensated accordingly. I've been working 2 and 3 jobs simultaneously for 15 years just to make ends meet, and even THAT didn't make ends meet very well due to being a single mom and raising 3 kids on my own and measly compensation. I'm so used to working about 16+ hours a day and being mom&dad with 3 kids and having time to do nothing but work and sleep, literally, that driving for 11 hours will be a breeze for me, a welcome retreat if you will (I've already driven 11-14 hours, at times having only 2 hours rest before I had to go out on another run after shifts like that, transporting PEOPLE for a measly $15 an hour - ooooowee), and if I get the chance to get into Old Dominion or a top carrier and I earn a good income, all I can say is look out because I'll be one of the BEST truckers out there!
Only $30k Gross First Year? Old Dominion is Just a Stepping Stone??

Apparently, you guys never worked for a small OTR trucking firm. Just how do you think those companies handle their "random DOT drug tests?"
For those that don't know, the DOT requires every trucking company to pull random drug tests from it's drivers on a random basis though out the year. A certain percentage of its drivers must be drawn from at random times. For example if you have a 20 truck fleet, and the DOT requires a 40% annual driver sampling. The company must test 8 random drivers through out the year and at seemingly random times. Like, you just cannot test tea-toddling "Ed" on every second Thursday of the the month for the first 8 months and call your company drug free. That will not float in any DOT audit.
If you a small OTR company, with 20, 50, 100 drivers you probably only have one terminal. So if all your drivers are over the road across the country just how are you going to pull random drivers at random times and meet DOT requirements. You just cannot tell the DOT, "sorry no can do. "
Now you have got the need figured out how are you going to complete the task. Are you going to send your driver to the nearest hospital for a drug test? How are you going to arrange that from across the country? Does the hospital take Com Checks? Does the hospital have truck parking? How about the clinic in the suburbs? Can you squeeze that flat bed with an oversize load in between the mini-vans at the local clinic? How do your route that driver and load by that clinic?
Just because some of you guys have not experienced it, or cannot understand how it happens, you ought to refrain from calling BS when you don't know the facts.
I have worked for a small OTR company. While I was not there long enough to enjoy a random. They, like many others, handled their business though truck stops. It is a common thing, easy to arrange, easy to pay, of little inconvenience for the driver, and covers the DOT requirements. -

I think it's a good thing that carriers do these random drug check points. It helps keep us safer out there. I don't know about you, but I don't want an 80,000-pound vehicle barreling down the highway toward me because of substance issues, or because of any issues for that matter. Plus, with all the "yahoos" on the road in their cars, etc., we need all the help we can get to be safer.
Personally, I think it would be great if employers took a hint from us in the trucking industry and extended this kind of random drug check program into THEIR sedentary places of employment that are in the offices and cubicles and schools and hospitals and banks, etc.born&raisedintheusa Thanks this. -
