Was just curious to how the big companies do it. If the lead driver has a cdl and the trainee has a permit. Can they run as a team legally??
Over head a WERNER driver talking about his permit and road test coming up at a truck stop on route 78 near little rock, AR yesterday

If he only had a permit WERNER had drop the ball big time. To drive the one with CDL has to be in the jump seat with him or it like driving with out a permit

Back in 2008 I was out in New Mexico deathly sick, a friend of mine flew out to drive back to Georgia. He had a CDL but only could drive Bus or a 10wheeler but had a learners permit for combination. So sick all the fuel desk I had to wobble into to pay for fuel wanted to call 911 I had to stay in the jump seat

So they still operate with the logs as 1 driver?

Not really, The newbie had to have the other in the jumpseat but run off his own log. The CDL owner needed to have logged onduty not driving

I would assume it is the same no matter what they have - permit or cdl, HOS is HOS.

BUT the word team seems to mean that one driver is driving while the other is resting. So I wonder how the insurance company feels about this, this is a big liability problem for them if something happens when the permit holder is driving and the cdl holder is sleeping and not in the front seat observing the permit holder. Can you imagine how this would make a lawyer's day great, a big company who allowed a permit holder to be a driver in charge of a truck under load while the trainer is sleeping? WOW the money that could be made.

I learned to drive when I was 19. From my uncle who owns a company in N.Y. I drove for local pick ups around long island with no license for years. Stupid I know but I am no stranger to bending/breaking rules...lol

Wasn't proud of it, just stating facts. I didn't want to judge someone for similar things I have done when I was younger
