Hello-
Im looking at replacing my 04 columbia with either 2009 cascadia or 2009 Prostar premium.
Cascadia: S60/14.0L 515 - 13 spd eaton fuller- 479,xxx- 3.42- APU-22.5 tires. 1yr/100k warranty!
Prostar: Cummins ISX 435- 13 spd- 465, xxx- 3.58- 22.5 tires- 1yr/100k Warranty! Sky Rise sleeper!
I'm familiar with the detroit motor and its upkeep. But Im not familiar at all the with Cummins ISX. Is the up keep the same as Detroit/parts and especially the price.
I would really appreciate your opinions.
Thank you!
R
Opinion: Cascadia or Prostar!

The 09s are the worst of the new emissions motors. You might do better with a older pre 07 emissions truck or an 010 one....... Why not fix up the old girl you have?
SHC Thanks this. -
pre DEF ISX are bulletproof. other than the EGR problem, just unplug it and go about your business. did i say that? oops.
-
Yeah, I think I would fix up the '04 and go with it compared to your other idea. Costs may, in the long run, be more for the other trucks than fixing up what you have. I would say that the pre DPF ISX's are easy to get around in just unplugging the EGR, but pre-DEF? Not quite that simple. Things got a lot more complicated with the addition of DPF and really more complicated with addition of DEF. These systems like to talk to each other. Now you can re-program the ECM to delete the EGR and DPF, but when you finally get done, not sure there is any true cost benefit than fixing up what you have.

I would love to keep my 04 and there's nothing wrong with her. But communist California will not let me in beginning of 2014. Im selling while Im still getting good money for it. I need to be 08 and higher in order to be OK to enter CA.

Neither, all 09's are JUNK.
Get a 2010 or fix up the '04 you have now. -
Any reasoning as to why all 09's are junk? Are 08's in the same category. 2010's are a bit out of my reach but I rather take leap and get the 10 rather than save now and get problems later.

My dad had a 2008 Cascadia with a 14.0 Series 60 @ 515 HP with a 13 speed. He got on average 6.5 to 7 MPG or better with his truck. He put 400k on it and it caused him very little trouble, just sensors here and there. In retrospect, the 07-10 DPF Series 60 IMPROVED over the 03-07 NON DPF models. He had no head or injector issues at all. He replaced a water pump once, regular over heads and some sensors for the DPF, that's it if I recall correctly.
PS, if you're fuel economy drop in one of these, check the EGR valve. It was failing and didn't trip a check engine light for awhile. When it did, EGR valve was replaced and fuel mileage went back up to normal along with power . -
There are many guys on here that can explain it better than I can . But basically the 08-09s have a dpf Only and they regen all the time. The 010s have a dpf and def systems the 2 systems seem to make the whole regen deal go much smoother. Less regening means less chance of a screw up. If you are Cali bound go for an 010! The new Detroits seem to be ok . The reason the price on those 09s seems so good is no one wants the junks.

im pretty impressed with how terrible internationals maxxforce engine is, i worked 1 year straight with a 2012 freight cascadia little to no problems. i worked 1 week with a 2012 prostar and its already so broken shop is throwing me out of the truck and into another international
To get to your point if that columbia treated you well i would stick with freightliner, i would not buy a international unless it was SIGNIFICANTLY cheaper then comparable freightliner... international to me comes off as a discount truck and in this world you get what you pay for. i would pick freightliner
