I have not been around Volvo's so I need some advice. I'm looking at a 2001 Volvo 770, model VNL64T, Cummins N14 435 HP, clean, non-smoker owner-operator unit. Very low miles <300K. It has 370 rears with a 10 speed. How well can I expect this truck to hold up in general and are there any specific things to watch out for?? with this configuration he says it gets around 7 mpg.

    Thanks in advance Jim

Check the bobtail weight. These were notorious for being very heavy for a factory truck. I had one that weighed in at 22.5K.
The hoods are very fincky about adjustments but there is an access panel under fender when they won't open.
If you get any paint chips on the main body, touch it up or it will rust as it is not aluimium like a standard truck.
The extremely low miles for the year would really concern me. Why is it so low? If it set for a while, that can cause lot of damage.

An older gentleman bought it new, and piddled with it he got sick a couple of years ago and isn't able to drive.
Yes I agree that sitting can cause alot of damage. I'm going to look at it today and take it for a spin. Thanks for the heads up about the weight. I might have missed that..

The N14 is one hell of an engine. Take care of it and it will live forever. I can see getting 7 mpg with it if driven around 65 and minimal idle time. I drove a '99 T2000 at Stevens transport with an N14 435, direct 10 and 2.85 rear axle that was governed at 68 and I managed to always meet the fleet minimum of 6.2, often getting 6.5 mpg. The overall driveline ratio of that Volvo is 2.73 so your cruise rpms would be even lower.

What do you think about going to 24.5 from the 22.5 tires

my last truck was 2001 volvo770, D60 motor; yes is heavy especialy if you have 2x 150 gal tanks, but watch your fuel level before pulling heavy loads. What transmission, 10 speed auto or manual? imop, something is fishy with the miles; even working shunt job should have more milles in 11 years.

IMO, pre Version 2 was the best Volvo Truck.

With that low of miles, I'd think I'd call someone with a scanner in and read the odometer from the computer.
Otherwise how long since it's been run over the road? Is fan clutch rusted up? How's the antifreeze look?

He would make more miles if he drove to post office every day in 11 years..Maybe its 300k after overhaul?

i have basically the same truck only with the 13 speed, really only get about 5.5-6 mpg, motor lasts forever and parts are fairly inexpensive plus with that motor you can go to any repair shop,i found a local shop close to me and use them exclusively, buy it and run it,if you dont buy it i will take it as i love mine, pull flat beds
