I have a guy wanting to swap his factory Garrett on a 470hp Detroit 12.7L for a newer turbo. I'm thinking a k31 or a 171701 would work best for him. He asked about a 171702, but I don't think that's ideal. He's installing a full tilt manifold and keeping it at 470hp. He doesn't want it tuned. What are your opinions on these turbos?

K31 IMO
High Stepping Thanks this. -
I got k31 on one truck and 702 on another. Both trucks are identical except turbos.
702 is a waste below 550hp, the turbo lag is very annoying, especially with 10 speed.
K31 is a good all around turbo, be it 470hp or 550. If your customer is staying stock, that's a better choice for him, good power and mpg.DetroitDudeBro, Magoo1968 and High Stepping Thank this. -
Thank you for the replies. I'd like to hear from someone who runs a 701 turbo, too. He's wanting a non-wastegate turbo, so I think the 701 would be better suited for the lower hp.

Factory on that engine was the S400, and it was gutless. The K31 stayed.
I'm headed home for a minute. If I get to swing by the shop I'll let you know the #'s.
FYI, all 4 engines responded best with the K31

The K31 is definitely the best option for a stock 470
High Stepping Thanks this. -
Hands down the K31 will come out on top for 470 the 701 aint bad at all but it will just lag abit more the K31 is good up to 550-575hp where it kinda runs outa steam then
-
i didn't like the k31 was limited to 30psi boost so i did the right thing and tightened. the waste gate up 5 turns right at 40 psi now.

How long have you had yours at 40 PSI -
couple weeks was a turd stock motor is set at 550
