Hello everybody. It's been a while since I've posted. I've had my class A for 8 months now working for a small United agent running household. As I posted before, I did not go to a school. The first couple of months I didn't do a lot of driving, we only have one tractor ('00 Shaker day cab), and someone else was in it already. The past few months, however, I have received some more experience. I would estimate the equivalent of 3 months or so. Does any one think I might be able to make the switch to freight, even if it's with Werner or a similar company? Or do I still need more time? Thanks for any responses.

Day cab is going to hurt you. Local will not count and you don't have enough stick time. What I have been seeing lately is 12 months OTR recently within the last 6 months.

The time I have had has been OTR. My agency doesn't usually go west of the Mississippi, but I did have a trip to AZ. I have also done some FL runs, and I'm sitting in Memphis right now.

They won't count that as OTR.

So basically you are saying because my agency is too small and cheap to buy a decent truck, I'm screwed?

That, and the fact you do not have the "diploma" from a school.

OTR is defined as 48 states by the majority of companies. Anything less, isn't considered.

For all intents and purposes, you will be a "trainee" at any of the major companies you apply to. They and their insurance company will want to see a diploma, due to the fact you haven't driven long enough to be considered an experienced driver. Or a driver at all for that matter.

I would say after about a year or two of " non incident driving " to call one of them and talk to a recruiter. Also alot of big fleets are now on a layoff mode, untill the economy picks up.
