After almost five years of driving, I recently found out that this is the same distance as staying on I-5 between Weed and Eugene without having to go over Siskiyou and the big hills of southern Oregon. If you're heavy, is this a faster way to go? 97 isn't exactly flat and I've never been over 58 so I don't know.

    Siskiyou Pass .... I-5 is 4310ft
Willamette Pass ... 58 is 5128ft and is a serious hill. Both Sides. East side lead up is pretty twisty too.

Only reason to go that way is if you are going the way of Reno. Pretty scenery, 2 lane, not super busy. If you are a slow truck, or get behind a slow truck, life sucks.

Both good answers. Only run those if needed.
This time of year, the RV’s really clog things up.

The biggest problem with not taking the I-5 is that if you have a breakdown or flat tire, you are a long way from anyplace that can fix it, and it will cost you a lot more. Plus as somebody else mentioned, campers in the summer are a pain to get stuck behind.

I lived on 58 in oakridge and it's just as hilly as I-5. Plus slower speed limits in the towns and pass ski area. Just stick to the 5. Really the only reason to go up the 97 is to go to northeast Oregon and Washington from California. It cuts off around 80 miles from taking the 5 and 84.

I was pulling 43K. They were all stuck behind me.
A nice drive to do at least once. In another thread, someone said they took it when they were heavy. There's no way that's faster than just staying on I-5. It's good to know about if I-5 is shut down by a major wreck.

I was actually coming up from Reno. Now I'm wondering if cutting over from Susanville over to Weed is faster than going north on 395. Don't care to do 58 again.

Susanville to weed is very similar in time vs Klamath up and over 58. I would guess that 36 to 44 to 89 may be just a tad slower if you have a slow truck.

A lot depends on your destination.
    All are reasonable roads.
