I am 21 and about to go through driving school. I definitely want to go OTR for as long as possible before starting a family. I know UPS, Schneider, Transport America and Con-way TL all state 21 as their minimum age, but does this mean I am likely to find employment quickly with any of them?
I am responsible; have no accidents, tickets, violations, crimes, etc... on my record; and I am highly experienced on 4 wheels.
Also, what are the chances of one of these companies granting me teamship with another driver of similar age?
OTR @ 21?

At Schneider you need to graduate from a training school they approve and get 3 month's experience then they'll hire you
-
The school I am going to attend lists Schneider as a company that hires graduates of its program. Is the three months part of their trainer program?
-
CRST hires you fresh out of school.Had a friend graduate, put in an application online and 2 hrs later a recruiter called and offered her a job.Think you have to find your own team partner at orientation.I hear good and bad about them(as you will with every company)but its an option for you.
Also i think your driving school will probably have a few choices upon graduation. -
Good to know! From reading reviews it seems like the main complaints are "idle" rules and home time. I could care less about the precise date I get home at this stage of life, and I will learn to deal with no A/C or heat.
I'm sure the school will have advice/options, I just want to get some ducks in a row before I get in over my head.
Thanks for the info. -
Way back in the 1900's when I started driving (1997) I was 21 yrs. and 2 mos. old and went straight OTR with Schneider. I recently had a friend go through a local truck school and hire on there. It still seems like a good place to start. If they hire at 21 and hire out of your school I'd put an app in.
Just use some common sense and take it from someone who started at 21. You won't know $ hit. 15 years later I'm still learning. Just use common sense and take things at an easy pace. -
Ha, if I have learned one thing in 21 years, it's "don't get ####y"! That is one reason I wouldn't mind teaming the first year or so. Good to know someone has 1st hand experience with Schneider hiring young drivers.
-
as a newbie i strongly discourage teaming. your new the team mate may be new and your sleep cycle will be off you're putting your life in danger with another driver. just want to be up front with you teaming is hard and it's something you need to really think through.
-
I never thought about that, but it really does make sense.

I know CRST catches much grief from those bound by contracts with them, but I am attending an independent school. I had a CRST recruiter contact me yesterday; it seems all they hire are teams... Would it be advisable to form a team there with an experienced driver?
