I'm actually writing/joining for my husband and myself. We tried driving as a team, but driving just wasn't for me. ANYWAY, my husband has about 6 years experience, but has been out of the truck for 8 years or so. He's been working all this time as a heavy equipment mechanic. So he knows, usually, how to fix some issues diesels might face. Ok, every person we have talked to about jobs have all said at least 1-3 months recent experience or recent graduate. He's had a current license for 14 years and his DOT medical card has been required to be up to date also for his current job, too. He drives their tri-axle dumps occasionally when someone is out. No one takes anything into consideration because it's all 'INSURANCE" reasons. They're willing to put someone who just got a license to drive a tractor trailor in one with a trainer and go all over God's creation, but someone who has experience and knows how to work on them, plus has everything required up to date, they can't work with him, even though they would train a student graduate. No one has ever heard of a "refresher course" for someone who has been out of the truck but still have a CDL-A. At least no around here. The local school said it would be the full $6000 tuition to go through school again even though he already has a Class A. I heard yesterday that they do have them, but the company that told me that said they didn't know who offered them or where I could get information other than google. They did know it was a 40 hour course. OK...we have had some contact with Central Refrigerated and they have their own training and since he already has a Class A, a road test and a few weeks with a trainer, he should be ok. Any advice on other companies and how they rate with their own training programs versus having to attend and pay for school all over again? Any advice would be appreciated. We've been looking for a while. He has to get away from where he is and he wants to get back OTR. I'd be going with him. As long as I'm not driving, we'll all be in good shape, lolI have heard a few stories about Central...
OTR Experience-just not recent-wanting to go back OTR

I know averitt was hiring recently and offering refresher training don't know we're you live so can't really suggest to much
-
I'd check with Central Refrigerated, Watkins Shepard, and Arnold. I know watkins will put you through a 10 day on site course and then send you out on your own (no trainer time), but they haul a lot of furniture that the driver usually has to unload.

There are companies that offer going out with a trainer for those needing a refresher. I saw a website today that offered refresher. I think it was Roehl but I'm not sure.

Averitt has refresher training also .

it may take signing on with one of the major company's out there for the refresher and what he wants to do ,flatbed reefer, ect good luck

From what you've posted, sounds like Central Refrigerated or Watkins & Shepard is the way to go. Talk to someone at both companies. Watkins & Shepard has many terminals plus, flatbed & van.
