It all depends on where you live, and the need the company has workers/drivers. I've known guys that have never gone OTR once the entire time they've held a CDL. The thing is, there has to be balance. Many newbies have it in there head that the ultimate goal is to get a good paying local gig. The reality is, it ain't enough of those jobs to go around. Could you find a local gig out of school? Sure. A local gig paying north of 50k for a rookie? Not impossible, but not likely. The year experience requirement is somewhat of a myth but not totally. A rookie will lose the opportunity to someone who is more experienced majority of the time.NorthEastTrucker Thanks this.

In Florida to get a LTL Linehaul job or even a Walmart private fleet job requires 2.5 years are the hardest from what I heard. Good luck

OK since you’re so curious I’ll just get specific I don’t wanna be out on the road more than a week I would rather be home doing stuff then running around this country spending nights in truckstop or shippers and receivers...
The driving part is not boring it’s the sitting part. Sitting in the truck other than driving which in this job it’s quite a bit. If I’m going to sit and Not Drive I’d rather be home. So in conclusion there’s 1000 ways to skin a cat and truck driving being out on the road for weeks at a time is not for me the truck driving part is just fine thank you very much for your time.Gearjammin' Penguin and dwells40 Thank this. -
I applied at Davis as well.

Again a part of ANY truck gig. If you don't like to sit at a shipper or receiver. You picked the wrong career. Even local, ltl, and line haul entail sitting.

Sitting a few hours is fine: sitting 12-37 is not:Speed_Drums, Gearjammin' Penguin and Muskie Thank this.

If you are sitting that long either your company or you is doing something wrong.

Line haul with Old Dominion is probably best for what you want.
Terminal to terminal/drop & hook.sventvkg Thanks this. -
Man this is getting juicy quick. @Wasted Thyme some of us like OTR, me being one of them. Some don't. What if you get burned out on the OTR lifestyle? Once you've got a few years in, you may want to run local or regional. I did local for a year, but found that I was better suited for the road. I haven't looked back. You're right there are down moments. Especially if you work for a reefer outfit that hauls a lot of meat. This is where trainers have to teach newbies how utilize the clocks, keeping drive time available.
born&raisedintheusa, Lumper Humper, sventvkg and 1 other person Thank this.
