That is the question. Imagine you're a guy, late twenties, married, no kids. Your wife is open to doing OTR as a passenger for one year. Also assume you can get a local job in your area as a recent CDL grad.

Which type of job do you choose and why? OTR or Local?

Depends totally on a individuals circumstances and pay, home time and other factors. Nobody can answer that for you.

    Agree 100%
Choose a company that's set up for driver comfort; refrigerator, APU, tv hookups, etc.
Contact Danny Herman Trucking and ask if they have a rider program. They don't run New York City or Northeast. They do run coast to coast. It's dry van which is much easier than refrigerated due to appointment times.
There's some decent refrigerated companies that have rider programs and trucks are really set up nice inside:
    Magnum ltd.
    Navajo Express
    Freymiller
    Schuster
    Pride Transport
    Jim Palmer Trucking

I love OTR, don't like Local, don't like Regional... But that's me, others feel much different.

As others have said, only you can answer that.

I'm with you on that; can't handle local; too much stress and not enough rest. Don't like regional either. Coast to coast and border to border for me.

    Stopped reading at ONE YEAR.

If local is the main goal, go local. In 1 year, you would be established instead of jumping ship and starting over. Measure twice. Cut once.

Keep in mind that many companies have a waiting period before you can have a rider. Magnums period is 90 days from hire date.

If your REALLY 50/50 on this look into the pay. Different parts of the country are different but around here (VA) local fresh out of school guys are making around $45k while many new OTR guys aren't. Most local guys here average $50-$60's with the smaller group of them above that.

I think otr is worth a try. Even if you don't like it, it will still be good driving experience, and also a good life experience.
