So I'm going OTR in a week or two, any ideas on what to expect? I'm teaming with someone who lives about 2 to 3 hours from my city (150 miles) so we can take home time around the same time. I'm used to driving locally, being a line haul driver doing the same route every day (West Memphis, AR to Clarksville, AR -- 430 miles round trip 5 times a week). That was so incredibly boring, and I need more $$$ so I figure Team could offer it because living paycheck to paycheck sucks. But you do whatever you have to do, a paycheck is better than nothing at all.
I have no major issues with backing, coupling, etc. Most of the panic attacks I used to have are gone, and my confidence has grown a hundred fold in the 7 months since I stepped foot inside a truck for the first time and got paid for it. BUT I'm almost 27, and I figure this would be my chance to get away from Mom and Dad's place. Maybe next time when I decide to stop OTR, I'll have enough money for my own place I hope.

So you think otr and teaming will make you more money then what you're receiving now?How much does this company pay a mile for teams?Have you done the math? This person you're teaming with, how well do you two get along? You don't mind staying out a month.I assume this company prefers you to stay out that long before hometime.
-
Well from what I heard when talking to him, they pay .48 cents a mile -- so with the split we're both making .24 cents even. As far as the person I'm teaming with, I don't really know him but I will get to know him now. The only issue he ever presented was if I was willing to work, because the last kid he had just got on the truck to hang out. I told him yeah no problem, I'll drive my 10 to 11 hours then you can drive your hours. We'll just switch like that, until we have to take a 34 hour reset.
Yeah I have no problems staying out a month (or longer). I really did enjoy the freedom of it when I was with my trainer, and when it was time to come home it was like "Aw man! Do I have to?" lol. Because all of the homesickness did go away... -
oh so this guy already works for this company.Team pay doesnt sound too bad.Can you tell me what company this is.My boyfriend and I are looking to team maybe if the price is right.Ohterwise ill be soloing it with hazmat tanker.Right now just waiting to see what tyson does with the other plant I pick up meat from.I can understand where that other driver is coming from.If his co driver doesnt wanna do his fair share of the driving then he has to pick up the slack.Far as hometime and you dont want to I think your company and the guy you'll be teaming with can work with that.Youll just have to do a few solo loads while the other guy is on hometime I reckon.

Theres is a knack to running team , you have to pull your weight as a team everything is 50 / 50.
And do not start crying about wanting to be home for next weeks WING FEST at your fav hangout 2 minutes after pulling out on the road for a month.AndrewMemphis Thanks this. -

What can you expect running team OTR? Expect to hate each other's guts within a month. It's worse than having a cellmate.

.24 per mile??!! I wouldn't leave the house for that! You can expect to be more tired than you've ever been, you can't really get good sleep in a moving truck. The only way team has ever made sense to me (and I've done it) is a husband/wife team where all the money is going to the same household, otherwise you will be making next to nothing. Go with the tanker, it's much better money and it's not that hard (I've done a lot of tanker and I'm a girl)

I've been running team for 9 years. I would never do it with a stranger. The only successful combinations are husband and wife, even then the relationship will get strained. Trust is a real big issue. Do you trust someone enough to place your life in their hands?, because everytime you feel a hard brake your going to be jumping out of bed. Sleeping with one eye open is very difficult and that is what you will be doing. The money is good but only if you keep moving. If you don't run hard, 6000+ miles a week, you will not make anymore than a solo. Make sure the company you drive for has a solid team freight base and is not using teams to run solo freight. Companies push drivers into team trucks because it's cheaper for their bottom line.
AndrewMemphis and RickG Thank this. -
If their average length of haul is less then 1,500 miles, I wouldn't team there. It will be hard getting someone to be honest with you unless you know somebody there who is also teaming. As was noted in an earlier post, teaming is ok with the right partner and the right freight, otherwise it will suck.
