A company in my area that I want to get on with requires you to be 23 with 1 year OTR experience. I am 22 with no OTR experience. Basically I have one of two paths I can take to get to this company I want to drive for. I could go work at a big box company (I.e Werner, Rhoel, etc) and do true OTR driving for the next year or I can go drive in the oilfields and make good money right away but I'm not sure if it would qualify me for the job I want in a year. Do you guys think oilfield will help my chances to get on with this company that wants 1 year OTR? Or would oilfield be considered local because I don't deal with shippers/recievers, logs, multi stops, etc.? Or is my better bet OTR with big box? I just want to take the right path to move me toward this company. Thanks for any and all advice.
OTR vs Oilfield and impact on future job?

Show me the money..... will you make more on the oilfields or with this company you like?

I've made better money with oilfield trucking over the years than any other kind. But the oil patch is the oil patch - it's always been chicken one day, feathers the next. Grab the chicken while it's here. You might make enough money and like it so well that you're willing to ride out the hard times when it's nothing but feathers.

oilfield trucking companies will work the **** out of you. When your off you will most likely be on call ugh!!! Good Money but you can make just as good with a good OTR company

With the company I want to work for I can make about the same as the oilfield in a year, but I have to sruggle this next year at big box. Hometime with the company will also be better in a year than oilfield. I think I've answered my own question I guess. I'm better off keeping my head down for the next year at rhoel and then moving on to this other otr company. Plus with oilfield driving, cost of living is going to kill me because I will have to pay two rents, home and up in ND. With OTR, the truck is my second home and I get paid to live in it. Rhoel it is. This next year is going to be a PITA.

I'd go the oil field way then try to get on with a high paying gasoline hauler. Many of my friends did just that.
