You are going to either run or you will be made to sit for not running by dispatch. You will have a whole month if you like doing nothing waiting on a load that will never come as punishment. Until you quit.

We carried loads that were literally so important, if I can remember one in particular blood products. Blood and treasure of a people going to the other end of the USA. 52 hours. Its there. When you have a team and there are 10 big bosses waiting on it on both coasts to be there to the hour and MINUTE... its critical that load gets through...

Or... you can have a load of beef from Liberal KS to Hunts Point NYC. When you get there you are going to sit and wait all night until sunrise to get docked. THEN work all day in that trailer to move 48000 pounds inboxes. By Late afternoon you are told to dead head to Albany NY and pick up a load due in Memphis by morning.

Aint gonna happen. But off you go.

Today's ELD has been a product of those days. And in some situations it's even worse. Rack up violations trying to find a place to park with 10,000 other trucks near Chicago.

Your personal time schedule means nothing in trucking. You will be given a appt time to be wherever that trailer needs to be, and some days you drive and some nights are days. Flip Flop your nights and days. And some of those nights will raise hell with your natural human sleep cycle needs.

The Hours of Service is not the end all be all. The best version would date to 1962 where there is enormous flexibility built in to do things with that truck and your time you are not allowed to do today. For example drive 5 sleep 4 drive 5 sleep 4 until your 70 is all out in 5 days. Then sit for two doing whatever you like.

And finally but not least. There are shippers, receivers. Controlled Bases by the military (* You will NEVER get that rifle on base... and they check everything...) customs Canada (Oh my oh me...) and so forth. Among other problems.

I get it you have interests and things to enjoy in life. Thats awesome. But its not trucking.
