Are trucking jobs easy to get for someone who has been out of the workforce for a few years?

I wouldn’t know, I’ve been working since I was 13 and I’m 62 now. I worked 2 jobs through out high school also. I’ve never been out of a job nor fired.

Short answer: it depends on --
    • where you are located
    • the type(s) of freight you are pursuing
    • supply vs demand for qualified drivers in the area of interest
    • your previous driving history (accidents, citations)
    • your previous criminal history (if any)

I was able to land a dry van gig after being our of the workforce for quite a while.

But that was then -- & this is now.

What type(s) of freight did you have in mind -- & where are you located (a zip code will work fine if you're location shy)?

What are you calling a few years? 3 years? 10 years??

Some companies will hire you, but with training, if it's only been like 4 or 5 years. But that depends on how much experience you had previously sometimes. Training = you will have to ride with a driver trainer for a couple of weeks etc...

I guess I should have been more specific. I was in a completely different industry (not trucking) since the early 1990s. Starting in May 2020, I started working toward starting my own business, but it did not work out and I don't want to go back to the other industry. Now I am thinking about getting a CDL-A and starting a trucking career. Before I took this hiatus, I was working a job that I was at for about 7 years and after that they kept me on call for another year and a half. I can get a very good reference from them. So all of my previous work history would be outside of the trucking industry. But I'm wondering how much it matters that I took approximately 4 years out of the work force (although still technically working on my own stuff) before applying for a job with a trucking company.

Did you file income taxes the 4 years you worked on your own stuff?

Either way; attend a good cdl school and get all the endorsements and you'll be hired.
