If I was going to stay local, and buy a new home or rent an apartment, that is exactly what I would do.

I don't know the names off hand, but I have heard of CDL schools that include a motel room (and shuttle transportation) in the tuition costs. I doubt it would be a nice motel and you would mostly likely have to share with a another student, but I suppose it might be a better option even if it cost a bit more.

Same in my situation. Had class B in the past and just decided to drive again. I look forward to school and Look forward to working for one of the three companies that are interested. Yep, I got a job waiting and they are not ###### companies.

That is interesting, of course I can just spring for a crappy motel myself, depending on which route is cheaper.

But now.... Am I going to get better training than if I just pay off my Prime inc. $3500 bill IF I HAVE TO? Cause remember, if I stay with them for a year, I've saved at least $5000, and made a little bit of money at hte same time.

But I do sorta see some sense in your plan.

    Beandip,

Not sure if this still applies, but I had my CDL schooling paid through a federal program called WIA. The money is divvied out to the states and the states come up with a program to divvy it out again to the counties. There are a few hoops that you have to jump through, but they'll pay up to $10k for you to attend truck driver training at the school of your choice. (the money is paid to the trucking school, not to you).

I took the 5 week program and lived out of my house (there is a choice to live in 'school housing' too, which is also paid for through WIA(Worker's Investment Act)). Stared 12/01/14 and finished 01/03/15. I now have every endorsement possible including passenger and school bus (why not, they paid for it and it is now on my license permanently).

Anyways, the hoops are not that hard to 'jump through'. One of them is proving you have applied for 10 jobs over the last 5 weeks; piece of cake there. Another is getting a pre-approval for hire, any ol' trucking company will do (I used U.S. Express). It does NOT mean you have to go with them, but you need at least one if not two approvals. There are a few more but you'll find them simple enough. Most of it is documentation of one type or another.

It took me about 3 weeks to get everything together and approved and I was in.

Best regards and best of luck to you,

I'm self employed with decent income. I don't qualify for need based assistance. Again, paying for schooling isn't an issue. I'd rather hang on to my money, but can pay up front if I have to.
I'd rather not take some funding that someone more in need of can use. If I become in need, I hope there is still a little left in the coffers for me. :)

I certainly don't mean sound ungrateful for the idea, tho.

I'm all ears for any idea. My life is about to make a drastic change, and all information is good information.

Keep the money, you will find a better use for it than a massively overpriced third party school. Take advantage of one of the carriers that will get you a CDL at their cost. The year you trade is experience you'd need in any case before you'd jump to your next job. 2¢ FWIW.
