Im looking into buying a newer roll off truck that is california legal. I see many ex tractors being modified into rolloffs in my area. They seem to be in a very affordable range for me to get started vs buying a heavy duty truck with factory 20k lb fronts. Would adding a pusher axle to one of these said trucks help offset the lack in steer axle capacity? Im just trying to feel out others opinions on this.

I don't claim to know California laws at all, but I'm pretty sure they don't like pusher axles, lift pusher axles at least. Doing the kind of work you'll likely be doing with such a truck I'd want heavy specs, Chalmers or Haulmax rear suspension, bigger front axle. If I was to go with air ride I'd want a Pete Air Trac, as I have experience with them and they do the job okay. I've heard an AG460 Kenworth is decent if you add dual leveling valves. Then comes the question if you want to go with a cable system or hook lift.

I've really thought about getting into these but as of this point I don't see the writing on the wall for them being a good fit. Yet.
