How many dollars for a reman engine?
I know I would be in a bind just getting started and needing 25,000 for an engine. -
I may be around 10k out of pocket.
-
With Cat parts? Not bad.
-
I'm glad to hear that they are working with you.

Where are these 10 grand E model cat remans??
If your head is not cracked, I would have it rebuilt. There is no certanty that you will not get a head from cat that has not been welded, been lots of reports of bad ones.
I know some are touting aftermarket heads now, and I am sure some are good, but I only know two guys personally that have used one, and both were replaced within a month, with a cat head.pushbroom and Rideandrepair Thank this. -
I'm glad you don't have to foot the whole bill and hope all goes well for you from here on out. As far as buying new next time, that is a good option. But what you have learned here is going to help you in the future if you choose to buy used.
Many read on these forums about the importance of doing due diligence on a truck before purchasing and I have seen some question spending the money to do this. Getting a dyno with blow by test run, getting the oil analysis done, getting a ecm dump and having a trusted mechanic go over the truck probably would have saved the op a lot of grief here.Rideandrepair and Swine hauler Thank this. -
$10K was not for the Reman engine, it was for the inframe minus labor. He was stating that cost asking for it to be compared to reman engine.

It boils down to cost. A Reman may not be any better than a good rebuild. The Head down the road, will cost a lot more than $950 In labor only. More like at least $2000 for the head and gasket, and almost as much in labor, unless I’m missing something. Main thing is they pay for whatever parts are necessary, you’re paying the same in labor, either way. If the head checks out, it’s good. I’d want to make sure cups and springs valve guides, seals are all good. Better if they pay for a new head. Good Luck to you.
