    I was just thinking of the amount of weight that such a bridge would have to support, the only good thing is that the water is what is actually holding up the boats, so the additional weight would not be any more than what the higher level of water in the canal would weigh.

    If the bottom which we can't see were round, and more than likely it is, that would make it stronger.
