Last time i crossed the GW was in april it was 220.00 need to be at the bridge by 3pm move across about 10 pm, depends on size and axles. but escorts and route survey are required takes 3 days to get a NYC/ bridge permit, ecscorts start at 300 each way. generaly if your going out on the island they take you through manhattan either way you are still need a NYC permit this covers the 5 boros as well! If you call tallwide and heavy or maureen NYC permit/pilot car service she takes care of everything for you

I don't recall the name off hand, but I will see if I can find it for you. They were recommended to me by another pilot car company. Once I got in touch with the pilot car company things went along fairly smoothly. -
Best thing to do as other posters have said.
Have a local pilot help you. Turns can and will be a pain, plus the traffic. You go in at night... -
Yeah, that is what I was leaning towards even though I have used another permit company for some time now I just don't want them to miss anything and end up costing me in delays or fines.... Mostly I posted here to try to get an idea of all the associated costs with the tolls, permits and escorts for these moves and to see if it is even worth the additional headache but getting advice on the permit and pilot car companies in the area will really help me out.
Thanks everyone for all the helpful info so far.... -
If you have ez pass and cross at certain times its only lol $75 dollars. They could plate the Gw in thick gold with the money they make everyday. What a joke.
cetanediesel Thanks this. -

they (Nassau county) will only allow movement at night on the LIE with escorts....otherwise you must wait until daylight

You can run oversize on long island at night with front and rear escorts. Wait times at throngs neck can be long depending on how many loads are stacked up. In NYC limits you only need one rear escort over 10'6" wide. Easiest to cross over tappan zee bridge and head right for bridge waiting area. NYPD DOT usually won't hassle you because there are no safe spots to wait until dark to enter city limits if you come down I95. Hope it helps

I still haven't ran a load in but I took one out a few weeks ago. I used High, wide and heavy as my permit company since they are right in NYC and know their $#!/ . I was 10'9" wide and 60 long and no escort was required. I was routed thru the Throgs Neck and the GW no issues and no drama. I was able to run The LIE during the day then shut down until 11pm at tgr Nassau County line waiting to cross the Throgs Neck, I was required to have strobes on front and rear and flashing on read corners as well. Called ahead they only said stay in the right lane, they checked my permit, copied my DOT # and plates and they allowed me to pay with my EZ Pass but I had to give it to them to charge ot accordingly, then they sent me on my way. The GW was a PITA cuz they route you into the city on exit 1C +I think not was 1C), then you have to follow the signs and directions closely to route You back to the upper level without "many" choke points (there are idiot a parking all in the roadway along the route so it was tight thru certain spots). Once I got thru the GW there really is nowhere easy PR safe to shut down until daylight so I went to the nearest service center area, the Vince Lombardi , and shut down until the morning. Wasn't as bad as I expected overall, none of the officers at the Throgs neck seemed to even care about checking me out.

Yeah, they are really lazy. John and Paul are great guys at high wide and heavy. Most of there escorts are pretty good. One time they got lost but the other load I was with knew where to go. Permitting through the NYC DOT is actually pretty easy. Once you get the account set up it is fairly simple. Just so you know, it is hard to get permits more than 24 hours in advance. The engineers are lazy. When it comes to overweight be careful too. New York state bridge formula is not the same as new York city bridge formula. And the other thing they do which is strange is they permit you based on you tire ratings not on actual weight. Example, a tub grinder I moved only grossed 80,000 including the tractor. NYC DOT wouldn't permit me for less than 95,000 because that was the some of the tire ratings. Most of the time especially in the summer, you can go wherever you want. There are so many paving trucks running around with strobe lights they don't even know who to hassle. High wide and heavy can get expensive too. In the city, we would just use a company pickup with a strobe light. NYC DOT does not require certified escorts and the police don't seem to care. Moving at night through there was usually very easy. Less traffic and the four wheelers seem intimidated by the strobes. Good luck!!
