    Divisible load?
Planned route? Interstate or off interstate?

Divisible load? Take your empty weight and subtract it from 80000. Nondivisible on the interstate with 5 axles total, usually 94000 GVW. Tires and axle ratings up to snuff, usually it's 20000 per axle. But beware...loading a 5 axle rig more than 93000 takes precision. If you go over axle, you have to call a crane and get it fixed at the weigh station.

Is the 40ton trailer a two or three axle? Safe planning is 12k steer(unless you have a larger rating) and 20k per axle. That is the lowest state rating. Some will allow up to 25k per.

Your tractor will have a plate on the door jam or just inside.

On that plate is the GWVR for that tractor. NOT the GWVR for the combination in total. Not usually.

If you got a two axle tractor, Im going to presume you can load to 9 ton on the drives and 6 ton on the front. Im also presuming day cab. That will make it maybe at most 10,000 pounds on a really small day cab. Call it 5 ton. 6 is better. ah what the heck 7 total tare empty tons with fuel.

15 ton take 7 away makes a payload of around 8 tons possible.

Now your trailer, whatever it is has a gross weight vehicle rating on IT's stamp plate near the glad hands. That is the weight you cannot exceed.

Until we find out what sort of trailer we are doing I cannot proceed further.
