So yesterday I had to go down to Indy for a class and drive back afterwards, bout a 3 hour trip one way. On my way back I saw an oversized load, it was a fan blade for a windmill, that was oversized in length. It got me to thinkin how do oversized loads fuel up? Is it preplanned, or are there "special" truckstops? Just curious.

Preplanned alot of times I drop my trailer close by and bob tail to fuel
-
Or you can't drop your trailers T/T and run a different schedule. No TS dinner for you and no rest area after 3PM.
-
I drop myn in the truckstop parking lot and bobtail for fuel or I will leafy the trailer some were else and have a pilot car their to watch it

You would be amazed on how much training and coordination goes in to a move when it's very large. You get up around 200,000lbs you have to have a certified surveyor come out with the city and county people when you're off the highway. Plans must be made to minimize the damage and any items that must be moved is at the cost of the mover. It's a big deal and costly. That's why every shipper will try to reduce the load to fit the requirements.

Almost all fuel islands aee 14' wide, under a 12' wide load I will fuel assembled, with pilot car's help, over that park the trailer & bobtail to the island.
Like the party said, over 200,000. known as "super loads" require route surveys, at times LE escorts, bucket trucks, cable poles, rear steermen, etc. -
Most oversize you can drop your trl. and fuel.
Then you get the setups with just a 5th wheel cradle and dolly. Then you check out the fuel island first to see if you can fit.
If not hope you can back it up and steer it out.
I have had to have a fuel trk, come to me only twice so I could fuel.. There is an extra fee for that.
Super loads can be a real hassle.
Hopefully you can drop and then get your fuel.
In Ohio, you can not go into a trkstp unless the exit is on your permit if the load is heavy.
You either park in a rest area or hope you get out of their their state in 1 day. You plan ahead.
Then if you are running a really big ld. like a 19 axle or bigger you more than likely have your own crew with you that have tanks in the back of the pick up trk.
But most 19's are setup where you can drop and then bobtail for fuelATL-1 Thanks this.
