I dont why driver are against what is good for them. Every business in america has their own association fighting for them against laws that disadvantage to them. But when driver mention union for truckers, bunch of drivers bash them for being communist.

To be fair, my understanding is wages had little to do with why unions were originally formed. Had more to do with workplace safety and merciless hours in miserable conditions. And in that sense, and in those times, unions were a good thing and were needed -

Union this union that. If you want a union go to an industry with one. Just drive up wages and out companies out of business. Sounds good to me.

Makes no difference what you pay drivers, or how for that matter, incompetence and ungratefulness will rear its head if the opportunity presents. Too much pay or too little can both be problems. In my former position as a fleet manager I had many drivers, paid hourly, who made well over $100K a year with very good benefits and other perks. And yet they still found a way to be unhappy. Even when given more and more they found new things to complain about. I think it is in the nature of some people to piss and moan no matter how good they have it.
My boss was insistent on paying all drivers the same wage regardless of which of our locations they worked out of. So in rural WY the guys were making better money than almost anyone in our town. But in the Permian basin where there were other jobs to be had we couldn't find drivers that could walk and chew gum at the same time for the money we were offering. I think now that I have left there they modified the policy and now pay a different wage based on location but it's still way off compared to other employers.
It boils down to this...the pay a driver gets needs to be commensurate with the type of work he does, the skills he brings to the table and the region of the country in which he operates/lives. If you don't pay enough then you get the worst candidates who can't be trusted not to screw up, therefore limiting the capabilites of the services you are offering. Pay them too much and you breed an elitist attitude that poisons your operation and wastes your money. Experience pays. Still amazes me that some guys spend three months in a truck, had no aptitude for this job in the first place and still think they deserve the same money that a guy with 10 years is getting. Probably the results of a generation of gullible "every kid gets a trophy" kids getting lollipops and sunshine blown up their rears by recruiters. Anyone remember when it was common knowledge that you had to pay your dues to get in a good position.
Admittedly I had no idea what the hell I was doing when I took that job. But going from driver to manager gave me perspective I lacked when I was the driver sitting around complaining that we should be getting paid more.Zeviander, gokiddogo, cnsper and 1 other person Thank this.
