Overweight limits in California

    Hi...what are the overweight limits in California? I am over approximately 200 lbs in the rears and have talked to some other California drivers and they said that the scales will allow up to 300 lbs, however I believe that to be in the drive axle because of fuel. Will I be able to pass the scales being over by 200 lbs in the rear axle without getting a violation? Thanks any input appreciated.

    Your best bet is to call the scale nearest you and ask.

    If there is no tolerance for over-axle weights (that 300 lb. stuff because of fuel sounds like a fairy tale--why would they let you be 300 lbs. over on drives but not on trailer tandems?), you already know who is going to pay for it. They can make you stay at a scale and legal your load. Cover your own ***. Call.

    I've always heard 2-300 lbs leeway. Never officially though.

    Can't recall ever hearing that; maybe I heard it and forgot :biggrin_25523:. I was going to call the nearest scale and ask, but got busy. I couldn't find anything about it on the Web.

    You are supposed to be allowed 400lbs over if you have an APU, but that won't help on your trailer!

    That 400 pounds for a apu..only applies if you are over gross.....Unless your apu is hanging on your trl..wont help on this issue. I would be more worried about making bridge ..depending on the scale..you will get a ticket

    Can't you just move your tandems 1 pin? That would take care of the weight.

    Has California even passed that yet? IIRC, as late as last year they had not accepted the recommendation.
