own authority means you work for yourself and can work for anybody once you get your mc and dot numbers but you must carry your own liability insurance as well as cargo pay all your own taxs medical insurance etc , maintain driver files, logs, drug testing etc advantage is you are not tied to 1 company and what you make is up to you
if you lease to a company you can only work for them they pay liability , cargo and keep your logs but you still pay taxs etc and they take a percentage of your revenue or pay by the mile basicially you are buying a job without employee benifits some make good money with alot less hassle if you are with the right company bad company you wont make more ,maybe make less than a company driver -
It can be a little confusing, but you need more than a truck/trailer, customers, insurance, registration, to haul freight. You need 'authority' from the feds to haul commodities for pay interstate. That is, you need to be registered with the feds as a carrier, just like an airline has to be. After you register you and your equipment, then you can haul freight, assuming you have insurance etc.
If you don't have your own authority, you can lease on to someone who does, and run under their authority. In fact, that is what you do when you own your power unit and lease on to someone and use their trailer and dispatch service and bookeeping. You pay usually about 20% for that privilage.
So you can get your own authority and have all the headaches of finding your loads, billing, dealing with shippers/consignees, equipment maintainence, rules/regs etc, or let the lessor have the hassles and pay them a % of the freighthaul.
