I have the option to ride with another driver from somewhere close to my house to the main terminal which is about 5.5 hours away. I'm seriously considering driving my personal vehicle there instead. What would YOU do?

If my own car was reliable enough, I would drive. It will be good not having to rely on anyone else to get you around while there. Ask if the company will reimburse for gas used to get there.
HalpinUout, JimmyWells and Shaggy Thank this. -
Thanks for the input. I'm leaning in that direction as well. I just looked up the bus travel time and it's almost 11 hours and more money.

I don't have a car, but I rented one rather than deal with a bus.

I thought about driving my Tahoe to orentation myself. I could also sleep in the back of it so i dont have to sleep in a room with strangers. Not sure though.

If the company lets you take the big truck home when you take hometime, unless you have several vehicles, why would you want to leave a car there?
And if they can have a driver pick you up , I'd do that, you'll learn a lot , unless the driver is a lunatic,JimmyWells Thanks this. -
I've decided to take my own ride. It's cheaper, takes half the time, I can stop when/if I want and if anything goes south at the terminal I can roll out whenever I decide.HalpinUout, 1278PA and tucker Thank this. -
Not feeling stuck at the terminal is worth it. I turned in the rental car when I got put up at the hotel, but wish I had kept it longer as I had to rely on rides to and from the terminal.

I am thinking about doing the same, drive my car to orientation. Its a 3.5 hours drive. Thank you for asking this question.

I'd option several things before a POV is left behind at the company orientation
- A friend to drive
- A family member
- Greyhound sucks ( better then recovering a POV )
- Airlines are cheap for one way destinations ( depending on where you live ) Often reimburse you.
- Assuming this is a OTR gig, Still not a 100% employee until all the hoopla has jumped through after several weeks, It's possible to jump ship on the opposite side of the country ( numerous crap can and will happen.
- Amtrak
- Megabus
The plus side
Decide the company isn't for you. Drive away and never look back in your car. No worries about getting home.
Over 5 hours would be pushing it for me, to leave a POV.Last edited: Apr 14, 2016
