I know the ports are closed but I was looking at different work for my truck and wanted to know how long do you usually have to wait for a container at a port? How's the pay? Is it worse than reefer and van. Closest port for me is Phila, PA. Thanks, any help is appreciated.

.I did RR work in it's infancy, late 80s, and I wouldn't recommend it then, but today, the biggest plus, is the chassis' all use tubeless tires now, I hope. As the (trucking) world continues to deteriorate, the RR is going to be the hottest thing. It had an increase in 2023 of 3.7% of goods hauled, and so far in 2024, up 7.4%. Federal Highway Comm. estimates it will grow 30% by 2040. Doesn't sound like much, but considering the amount of goods shipped, it's huge. I read, there are currently a whopping 5800 container ships, each capable of carrying 20,000 containers. Sounds like job security to me. The strike? Nothing new, these crybabies will get what they want, but not without making a big fuss about it. I say go for it. Many deliveries are probably within your home 20, maybe couple hundred miles radius of the RR terminal. I did okay out of Chicago, and if I was to continue, I'd get my own aluminum spread axle chassis and just do live drops. Good luck, keep us posted.

Port work is extremely competitive. It is the lowest paid OO work there is. Essentially the cheapest carrier gets the work and then they lease on people that are ignorant and/or can't get a real job for various reasons. Company drivers do better hauling intermodal.
Unless you must be on a 1099 I strongly encourage you to drive someone else's truck and get paid W2, hourly with overtime after 40.
Ports are horrific time wasters and my bank has better hours then they do. You'll get paid by the load if leased on and you will get screwed due to lasy union workers and ludicrous time restraints.
Have you gotten any lease agreements yet? Read a couple and see how many opportunities the carrier has to screw you especially with the escrow. They'll also overcharge you on IFTA and IRP fees as another sly way of stealing from you.TheLoadOut and DUNE-T Thank this.
