Sure it can be done. I’ve done it. You will very likely go broke though. You really need to be able to commit your entire life to it to have any chance. Or dedicate 12 to 14 hours per day at the least, 7 days per week.

My guess is you wouldnt even be able to find a driver. It’s not as easy as placing an ad and getting calls.

Let me gaze into my crystal ball. Hmmmmm, yes, I see it! In 6 months, I see your friend showing up at YOUR 8-5 job with a baseball bat!

    yesssss......??

I read the OP, I say go for it, his truck will be repossessed and sold cheaply, his friend won't be a friend any more and he can deal with the creditors.

I just bought a three truck fleet that started out like this, I got it for 60¢ on the dollar for all the trucks, trailers and equipment.

I just don't people, they have a job but then want to enter into a business where 100% of their time is needed to get the business off the ground and for what?

    The BIG BUCKS in trucking.

They don't realize that Saul is looking for them to get into an accident and take everything away from them and they don't get it isn't like just stick a driver in the truck and let them go.

Sorry ... OP, don't do it.

Well I'm guessing they didn't come into this forum and talk to you all fine folks before they did it.

I am very much aware this is going to be difficult and that I may just lose all my money and even a friend. I just want to mitigate that as much as possible and learn from others mistakes.

Do you have a very nice stack of cash built up and are you willing to lose it?

    Difficult is a understatement IMO.

It is hell. Then glimpses of good and even great sometimes.....followed by more hell/good/hell/good.

    LOL.

Idk, without knowing the business, the mechanics or even the driving side. Can you answer your phone at work 24/7, drop what your doing and fix your driver’s issues; be it with brokers, dispatch, mechanical? You might could lease on to a company that provides dispatch, and that would pretty much take care of that, besides the mechanical part.

Payroll needs to be done. W-2 style payroll takes a little time. Doing the proper withholding procedures. Quarterly filings to state could be done on your weekends I suppose. The more you look into this, the more hopefully you’ll see how much time it will require of you to keep the ship a float.

Maybe you have a mechanical background? Because getting into this business without a mechanical background/understanding makes an uphill battle a slippery one. When you don’t know your drag link from your tie rod. When you don’t understand your emissions system$$$. When you don’t understand the terminology and part purpose and lingo, you quickly become a person that shops love to pry money out of.

Can it be done? Some say yes, some say no. Depending on your liquid situation, I might would look into a different business. Not saying you can’t do it; but I remember getting into business out here, and if I had a driver to pay on top of my limited experience, I don’t know if I would of learned quick enough. (And I was already a cdl driver of 2 years). I suggest you go to the owner operator section on here, and just read. Read many posts, dating from now on back some months. Get a feel for what your future peers are doing and not doing, and develop a strategy and a feel for things.

No answering phones or any that.

I'll be paying my buddy a percent to take care of most all the daily tasks.

I pretty much just bring in the $.........With that of course means I'll be learning the business as I go.

He's got a solid account with a broker that his dad has known for 20 plus years. He's got 3 trucks himself.

Starting a business venture with a friend as your employee is the surest way to lose a friend.
