Hi! I'm looking to become an owner operator within the next year, as well as in the future employ some drivers of my own. What insurance will I need to not only cover my driving and my own truck, but the employees driving my trucks as well? I will not be providing them health insurance. Thanks!

Big Road Chris and Need4Speed Thank this.

Insurance will depend on a bunch of issues but will be high, it will depend on how you will be an owner, owner with an authority or an owner leasing to a carrier.

You will also have to have insurance for your employees for workers comp.

Use the search, Luke! Every other thread here is about this. Just read, read, read and talk to as many O/O's as you can. Not just here, talk to the older guys at the docks that look like they have their stuff together. If they look like it they usually do.

Hi @TylerHarris96, congrats on working towards O/O within the year! There will certainly be significant cost in the beginning as a new venture...it's almost like insurance purgatory until you can show clean history over a few years.

You will apply for insurance under your new operating authority. Your company's liability, cargo, and other insurance policies will all be under this authority and this is also where you list your drivers as employees. Choosing to employ drivers under 26 or drivers with less than spotless records will definitely have the likelihood of increasing those premiums.

When the time is right, you'll want to line up with an insurance agent to advise you professionally. Remember the process for getting your operating authority is 21 days and you will secure your insurance at that time.

    Good luck!
