Hello, im an owner operator leased with a carrier who has the DOT/MC number, I pay them 10% of my loads, I paid diesel myself. She just looks loads for me, by the way only with CH Robinson, and always complains because I refuse to get loads over 40k pounds. However my question is regarding the detention fees. She also gets the 10% of that amount. That is right? I though that money is for the driver not for the dispatcher. Could any one who has experience on this matter clarify that for me. Please thanks

I'm sure there's no law saying you get 100% of detention pay. If you have a written agreement it could be "spelled out" somewhere in that. If they only get 10% and its their athuority you may not be doing all that bad.

If you're only hauling for that broker I would be more concerned with the rates than detention time. Not sure what you pull or where u roam but something tells me you're leaving a lot on the table.

It is what ever YOU AND YOUR DISPATCHER AGREE TOO. I would find an other person to find loads, CH Robinson has hundreds of loads all over every day but the are one of the cheapest brokers in the country,, many companies list available freight everyday on their websites,
there are also some that you can get load alerts from too,,Gather all the email address from as many brokers and carrier broker dispatchers you get,,every time you are looking for a load and headed to a destination send them an email notifying them you will be available and many will call you,,or find your own loads,,look in the morning before you start each day,,stop a couple times each day and look some more and then when you park at night,,but forget CH RObinson their rates are too cheap.
It cost $300 to get your own authority, takes about 30 days to get authority and an other 3weeks after they grant it and verify ins then hit the road.,about $2,000 for your tags,,UCR and an IFTA account under $200 and your cargo and liability insurance should be around $5000 your first year and most of the time you need only about 20% down to start you insurance and then payments for the rest,,OOIDA is not a good place to buy insurance,,they are ins brokers and it will cost you 10% or more than finding your own ins,
Dalily Underwriters in Penn is a good ins company as well a Northern,, Stay away from Progressive very expensive..Last edited: Sep 6, 2014

I know, Im really disappointment with CH Robinson, she says it is not other loads available for me because I request loads with less than 40k. She gets mad when im not agree with the first load she find for me. She pretend to work only one day for me, find loads one day for the whole week and done. When she notified me the loads for the whole week I refuse some b/c low rate, lot of tolls on Pennsylvania etc. She says that tolls does not have nothing to do with brokers and pay rate. Im new on this industry, just bought my own truck and trailer and just want to work hard. I just want to hear opinions, do not want to move to another carrier and find out that all work the same way. thanks

edit: Tell her that if tolls don't matter, then she can pay the tolls for you. Because they don't matter.
That 90/10 arrangement sounds suspect as well. Demand copies of the rate confirmations for the loads, and call the agent listed on the rate confirmation to verify that all of the information is correct. It sounds like she might not be up front about the rates. And I don't see how she can preplan you for the entire week, and do it efficiently. What happens if a shipment is refused, or your Tuesday preplanned load is cancelled? -
there is accompany out of north jersey called National Retail Transport/Keystone Freight Lines,
they are seeking O/Os and pay $1.15/mile plus fuel surcharge and all tolls..
They have steady easy loads that don't weight a llot.
look them up and call them -

Honestly, I can't understand why any broker would be privy to any detention fees, unless they can argue that they are losing money on one of their regular trucks sitting.
