How often do you see a Fleet truck with 19 gauges in the dash? Most warm bodies wouldn't know what to do with anything past a fuel guage and speedometer. Remember the term "Idiot lights"? They were given that name for a reason, not trying to bash anyone just being honest. How many fleet drivers really care about someone else's truck? Very few, but there are some that DO. And usually you'll find a bigger squirrel in the cage on a truck setup for O/O.

Fleets spec minimum and cheap. Comfort and function are bare minimum concern vs price.

O/O usually gets all the creature comforts and special optional features.

Sounds to me like I want to buy a used owner operator truck for my first truck. Where do I find those? Truck paper? Truckers report? Are they comparable in price range to used fleet trucks?

Before you but an owner op spec truck do your home work. For instance a fleet spec truck. Won't have 19 guages. But the spot where they go is still there. Guage cost less than $100 just cut out the plastic cover, and install the Guage yourself. In most cases the wiring is already there. Any dealer can turn up your horse power and torque, to its max allowed for that engine. (In some cases you will have to upgrade the turbo) Point being you can turn a fleet truck into a o/o spec truck. Cheaper than the difference in cost. Make it even better if you take your time. Just one or two things a month.

If I'm driving for a mega, they won't let me turn up the governing speed and the horse power, etc. Right? What kind of outfits do you work for where they don't put a hundred cameras and sensors on the truck and govern your speed and power?

I am the original poster… As one answer comes, it brings to mind another question. I'm hoping that when I no longer drive for a mega, they won't know about every breath I take and every time I fart. Just wondering if being an owner operator for a smaller company comes with that freedom.

Being o/o you're given choice where you want to work. Its your truck and you decide where to take it for service, which load to pull, how long to stay out, etc.
