At under $10,000 per year for insurance, is it really worth the hassle of going to the IRB 3 times a year to change your registration? Just get your own authority and be done with it?

Something to consider. The carrier is responsible for the liability insurance. Not likely they want to be responsible for insuring the truck when you are not hauling for them. Also not likely they will want to be doing an on again, off again, on again lease.
Sounds like the best way to do it would be for him to get his own operating authority and then he could use the truck to haul whatever he wanted. But there would be more office work involved and he may not want to do that.

We talked about it. He's not gonna go through with it at this time. Wants to retire from the industry all together and doesn't want to deal with the emissions crap lol
