Owning Multiple Types of Trailer

$350 per spot here. For $150 I would not mind having a reefer and van.

 

Don't forget a dump trailer. Can always haul a load of something.

I thought of adding a reefer. As soon as the dry box is paid off, I will do it. There are times here when reefers make a difference and times when a dry van is better. Especially when you work on a spot market.
For instance, the very hauling of produce from CA in Summer time then apples from NW to Chicago market might be worth owning a reefer. For Off season, the van could be used.
The maintenance cost of a van is low. Just having it does not cost much, except the parking.

I just got into a small lot after being on the waiting list for months. Went from $150each to $100 each. I’m also saving $400 a month in tolls on my dedicated run with the new spots. I’m pretty happy.

 

Where it would cost you that much for a parking spot have you looked into renting a reefer for the times you mentioned? I don’t know rental rates or how it would pencil out versus buying your own and having it sit when you’re paying that much for parking. Just an idea.

 

Rental is too expensive. They charge $1600 - $1700 per month, last time I asked, then on top of it, they want something for each mile and motor hour. Might as well get my own and brand new for that much. The parking areas are getting somewhat cheaper going Southside or much further West. But that's quite a drive. With a reefer, I'd rather stay close home, when I park it loaded over the weekend or over night.
