    Greetings all...
After getting laid off from a 17 year job on Monday, I am being forced to reconsider new career options...

I spent a lot of time on the road with my previous company. Not truck driving, and no I do not have a CDL... I worked for a small local IT company and spent a lot of time driving our cargo van making deliveries and picking up orders, and I actually enjoyed the chance to get OUT of the Office and onto the road.

Now that I'm out of work, and looking for something new, and am in desperate need of income quickly...
I've considered looking at some paid CDL Training and signing on as a driver with someone local.

So now comes my questions as I'm having a little trouble finding this information.

Can anyone recommend any companies out there, in the Atlanta area, who will pay to train me because we badly need the income, and give me a local route so I can be home every night? As this is a must for me. I'm not interested in any OTR driving... maybe someday, but for now its not really an option for us.

Doesn't even have to be a full sized 18 wheeled truck, but I wouldn't mind learning to drive one as long as its an automatic transmission and I get local routes with it. Otherwise, I could handle something as simple as a 25 box truck just fine... but every time I go search for "box truck driver" jobs, I'm directed to ads for companies like Swift and CR England, etc... and they all say they'll pay to train you, then they'll throw you immediately into OTR...

No thank you, I dont want to be driving some strange truck I'm just getting used to, driving it to some strange place I've never been to before... I prefer to stay local where I know the roads, and can be home every night.

For the most part you are looking for something that doesn't exist. Companies offering local work and hourly pay have no trouble finding good drivers with experience.

Despite what you may have heard otherwise, their is no shortage of drivers in the least.

Now the mega training companies have local work; some will even pay ( some not all) of their employees hourly. Some will pay for or reimburse for training. But,,,,,,, to get on a local gig you have to have either some experience with them, or a reason (think eeoc qualifications) for them to give you a local gig. Longgggg waiting list to get that kind of work, and your brown nosing skills have to be top notch.

This isn't just a thing that you go get a cdl and start driving, the jobs you want are those that are a premium to many and those who you compete with are those who have many years behind them driving.

I suggest you look at ups or another place where you can work the dock and move into a truck.

Texas_hwy_287 and Bob Dobalina Thank this.

True, to some extent - many LTLs have non-CDL small trucks (my company calls them "bruck" trucks) or Sprinter vans in addition to Class-B straight trucks, but as @Ridgeline said, those are typically assigned to dock workers who are moving into driving positions.

That is one avenue to his ideal job, but it won't happen fast or easily. I would recommend that route to a younger hard worker who is very patient and dedicated to that goal, but it typically involves paying some dues working part-time in a very tough environment and he better have some serious forklift skills. The timid should not apply!

It’s a long shot, but you could check with roehl. They offer paid training and they have a terminal in one of the Atlanta suburbs (Elwood or Ellenwood or something). I’m sure they run some local trucks out of there but I have no idea how easy it is to get one of those positions. Good luck, I hope things work out for you.

Schneider has lots of box truck jobs; some are, "no cdl required" or "CDL-B required" or "CDL-A required." Check Schneiders jobs website.
Fastenal has box truck, van, 18 wheeler jobs plus a good benefits package.

For immediate income, try foodservice jobs. You will need a CDL-A Permit and they pair you with an experienced driver who will train you and help you get the full CDL-A. They usually give you 3 mos/90 days to acquire the CDL-A.
McLane Foodservice is one of those that has that CDL Permit program. After you get the full CDL-S it's easy to make $70K per year. Apply for "Driver Associate."

Since you're laid off, the state of Georgia will pay for cdl school. Check with the unemployment office. In some cases they even pay for gas money to commute to the school. If you can do that, get the full CDL-A then there's dozens of jobs available like you want.
