Hello, so i'm looking through some pre employment papers and I notice this " All mileage pay is based on miles using Rand McNally Tariff Miles for miles traveled ". Is this practical miles or HHG?

Tariff miles are Household Goods miles:
HHG, or Household Goods as it is known, is the standard mileage guide that Shippers and Carriers use to negotiate rates for freight. It is the shortest legal highway mileage from two points, which an 80,000 trailer may take. The calculation does not consider time as a factor, thus the route may take more driving time, but accomplish less miles. The Practical Route is the most time efficient method of driving.Practical Routes tend to be the more desirable route of travel, and also may be used for calculating Fuel Tax reporting. Both are based on a 53' trailer length and 13'6" clearances.
    Hub miles:
Not many companies pay hub miles. I was lucky when I pulled reefers coast to coast and was paid hub miles. Hub miles are the miles showing on the hubometer and are the miles the truck moved during a trip. Even if I missed an exit which added another 25 miles to the trip, I still was paid for those miles because they showed on the hubometer.

So, are HHG ever actually accurate or near accurate for actual trip distance? Not including pit stops or rest stops, figuring those don't count as part of point A to B.

Nope. They almost always short drivers. Nobody expects to be paid to jump off the interstate for a hot dog. But it is perfectly reasonable to expect to get paid the actual miles between the shipper and receiver. HHG miles are generic miles between zip codes, not point to point miles between the actual origin and actual destination in a route a big truck would ever actually choose.

It is pretty rare to get more miles under the HHG system. If I remember correctly, I got paid for around 10 to 12% fewer miles per week than I actually drove back when I drove for a carrier using HHG miles. That's not missing exits, and not taking side trips.

It got to where I just figured my mileage pay was 10% less than what it was. Then I could more accurately predict what my pay would be. So whatever rate they tell you, subtract 10%.

HHG Miles are never accurate and are always the shortest possible route, using any road possible, even one a car may be hesitant to take. This is the worst way to be paid. I would refuse to work anywhere today that still paid on this antiquated system.

I would not work for a company that paid HHG. Run. It is to easy to figure practical mileage these days. A hundred years ago it was about all they had, we are well past those days.

Common? Who is paying like that? I've been an O/O for quite a few years, but even when I started 30 years ago we were paid practical after say 1998.

Just request you be paid with the same system they use to generate rate quotes with and you'll be fine.
