Yesterday, Elkton, MD TA. I'm sitting in my truck, on the phone with a broker booking a load. Well maintained Subaru 4WD pulls up next to me, clean-looking lady in her 30's, kid in the back in a car seat, maybe 2 years old. Lady is wiping away tears, gets out, comes up and bangs on my door. I'm finalizing the terms on the load I'm booking, so I open the door and tell her I'll be with her once I get off the phone. She says ok.

While I'm finishing up with the broker, one of the TA employees comes over and tells her she can't be in the truck parking area and makes her move. So she leaves.

I spend a few minutes reading over the rate confirmation that was sent to me via email. While I'm doing this, she re-appears on foot at my door with the kid in her arms. I open the door and listen to her story about how she's been stranded for 3 days and is trying to get to Richmond but doesn't have any cash.

I noticed that the mobile chapel is staffed; the pastor is in. I asked her if she'd been over to talk with the pastor to see if he knows of any local organizations that might be able to help her out. She had not, so I had her follow me over to it. While walking, I explained to her how there are many people that try to take advantage of truckers by giving false stories of being in need, and that since I didn't know her or have any way to verify her story, the best way for her to get help was through an official channel such as an aid organization.

The pastor asks us to sit, and I explain the situation. The lady chimes in and states that her debit card had been cut off due to an unauthorized withdrawal attempt, so she has no access to cash. Before either of us can say anything else, she continues with her story - she dropped her cell phone and shattered the screen. All of her family / friends' contact numbers were in the phone, so she can't call anyone. She tried to email some of them on a borrowed computer, but nobody answered her.

So - I asked her if the phone was an Android phone, and she said it was. I asked her if she had a Google account - conveniently she did not, so she didn't have any synced contacts. I asked her if she still had the phone, and she said it was in the car. Good! I asked her to bring it to me, and I'd be happy to connect to it with my computer, then download and print her contacts so she'd have some numbers to call.

She said she'd go get it and come right back.

    She never came back.

Don't give people money at truck stops when they come to you with a sob story.

I gave a guy in Birmingham $5 once at the Pilot. He approached me and told me he'd just walked away from his girlfriend because they were fighting and he didn't want to hit her. And he just wanted a beer.

    Sure, here's $5 dude. Enjoy.

So, if you want money from me, tell me the straight story. You'll have a better chance of getting it than if you try to invent some BS to feed me.

That's always been my theory. If you're hungry, I'll give food, but not money. Don't try an BS me. As the saying goes, I may have been born at night, but it wasn't last night.

I used to work the office life in downtown Chicago. Talk about panhandler heaven. I could share thousands of stories about panhandlers.

One in particular said he was stranded and needed to take the train home. i was right by the elevated station and the fare was only $1.50. So I said what the heck, I started reaching for $1.50. Before I even reached, he began stating that he lives in Indiana and the train ride costs $10.75 or some outrageous number. But of course, he asked for my address and said, "I promise I'll mail it to you". I put my wallet away and walked.

Another good one? Walking to the train station again (they love targeting commuters), a regular panhandler is outside the station. I walk by him and he flat out states, "man, I ain't going to lie to you, I'm going to buy booze with the money". I gave him $3 because of honesty.

Nowadays I don't even say a word to them. I just give them the look, shake my head "NO", and they walk. Maybe if they pull a funny zinger like the one guy does I give him a bonus for humor. That's about it.

I was at Elkton Wednesday, same lady, same story ! lol. One thing I thought was odd was she asked for $40 right off the bat. I guess I just missed you because I then went and picked up a load at North East and sat at North East Flying J til noon yesterday waiting for permit.

I do not understand how we have extra money for the one that is honest and wants to go by a beer but not for the sob story?
I beleive I have more panhandlers come to my door the most because of my large sleeper. Anytime I try to park in a truck stop at night, I get a panhandler.
Last night the story was, he was an owner operator with LandStar and out of money because his truck was in the shop for an inframe. After talking to him a little bit, he states he just wants to get something to eat. That's what I usually wait for . Then I gave him half the full Pizza we just purchased from Flying J.
And yes I usually give something. I know 2 out of 3 is a scam. But I hate to not help the third one that really needs help.
    Now let me hear it.

had a panhandler ask me for some money to get a cold drink and sandwich. i reached in my fridge and got a cold bottle of water and a meatloaf sandwich i had made the day before. he gave me a look like i was stupid. then he said he was wanting a pepsi instead of water. and he doesnt like meatloaf. he would rather have the few bucks. said im sorry but wont have cash until tommorow, as i ate the sandwich and drank the water.

flightline, i have bought more meals than i can remember. heck the other day at tallulah , i spent 146.00 paying for snacks a group of soldiers were buying.

when i got to the head of the line, i told the lady to add up what the rest of the soldiers in line had, and i would pay. they asked for nothing, but have given plenty of themselves.

my son and daughter are military and they all reminded me of them.

I can't speak for anyone else, but I personally have no problem, giving them exactly what they ask for. If they're trying to get "$5 For gas to get home", I'll gladly walk inside and prepay $10 on whatever pump they desire, but when I distinctly see someone hobble out of the hood with half a gas can that fell off a pickup with 3 teeth and the shakes so bad that it makes Micheal J. Fox's parkinsons look minor, I've got no sympathy. Heck, when I had my own truck, I even gave a guy a ride to a motel, gave him cash to get the room and helped him get checked in. I'm okay with helping, I just hate being lied to by anyone, but especially someone who wants me to give or go out of my way to do something on their behalf.
