Hey all! New poster here.
I am in a real bind. My dad is a truck driver and he was laid off due to budget cuts. He has problems with his employment history because he worked at so many places for 6 months-4 years and quit. He has a few traffic tickets. Four, to be exact. He was unable to secure employment and was evicted from his condo, had his pick up truck repossessed, went under water in his bank accounts and a whole lot of financial trouble.
I grew up poor, but am self employed and have excellent credit. I told him that I would get a loan and start up a trucking company for him, if he thought it would be profitable. I researched the industry and determined that it would be worth a try.
We started on November 4th and he made great money running for CH Robinson. He is such a hard worker that we actually pulled in $8,500 of Net Profit in the first month!
The economy started slowing down and before we knew it, the month's profits went from $8,500....to $5,400.....to $3,800......to $1,300....
As it stands, truck repairs and other problems with freight mean that I am losing about $500/month. CH Robinson is paying about 98cpm average right now. They were paying about $1.33!
I am really not in a position to continue this trend for another 2 months. I am looking at filing bankruptcy-even though my credit is perfect! My dad still feels that he deserves a paycheck, but the money is not there. He has been working for food and fuel for about 5 weeks now. I cannot pay him because I do not have the money.
Anyways, he doesn't qualify for a good company like Panther. I need to get this truck on to a company that pays over $1.15 per mile or else I will be wiped out. I really wish I never did this because now my credit is being ruined and I am going to lose everything I have!
I want to find a qualified driver to drive for a great company like Panther, have them drive the truck on a pay-per-loaded mile scale (with performance bonuses) and get this thing above water. The idea is to pay my dad a "pension" of about $500/month for his service, pay the Panther-qualified driver about 20cpm (plus bonuses) and use the rest of the money to pay off the debt from the truck, van, start up costs, ect.
Is Panther a good company to drive for in this situation? Can I find a driver who can sign on with a great company so I can fix this situation? Is there any way I can hire someone to do this without spending thousands?

The standard policy for expediters is a 60/40 contract . Usually the driver gets 60% of gross revenue and pays the fuel but gets 100% of the fuel surcharge . This arrangement prevents excessive fuel use by idling and off route miles . Some fleet owners pay for the fuel and give the drivers 40% . You will not get a driver anywhere to work for $.20 per mile , I don't care what "bonuses" you throw in .
luvtheroad Thanks this. -
Oh alright. 60+surcharge/40 sounds great.
More about Panther... Do they pay for deadhead miles? How much to they pay for a dry van? Is Panther a good company as far as getting consistent miles? Is there a better company for this kind of scenario? Is there any advice out there for what I should do to get back to the $1.15/mile zone? Do you know of any potential drawbacks of dealing with and working for Panther?
I have called a couple times and had no response. I suppose that is a bad sign already. -
The best thing for you to do is to find a team to run your truck, thats what most expedite companies like panther will require and those teams will usally get a good bit of miles, everything is still slow right now but i think that T/T are doing ok, the best place for you to look for expedite companies is to go to there are tons of advertisements on there and a lot of classifieds for drivers looking for work, the hardest part for you about all of this is that 90% of these companies , you will not receive a check for 3-5 weeks
Good Luck -
google expediters and you will find the proper forum for your needs

Are things slow for everyone? What is T/T?

Am I in the wrong place?
you will not receive a check for 3-5 weeks
Why is that?
As you can already tell, I am not familiar with the trucking industry. My dad has been driving for over 25 years and knows the ins and outs, but lacks the ability to sign on with a great company. -
Many expediter O/O's are reporting earnings 20% less than last year . Part of the lower revenue is because many contractors refuse some of the lower rates being offered . Most carriers are reducing rates to gain customers . O/O's aren't willing to run more and earn less .
T/T is tractor trailer . You get paid when they get paid . Panther's idea of an "advance" is 50% when they get the signed bill .
You might consider Quality Carriers . They are tanker and they aren't as good as they once were but the last I heard they have a guaranteed rate per mile and guaranteed miles per week . From the Quality Distribution website

- Owner Operator Averages in Mileage Pay Program:
- $1.05 / Loaded Mile (practical)

keep your head up , contact recruiters from all companies and decide which company is best for you.Baack Thanks this.

Thank you for the info, Rick and moto.
Is Quality Carriers paying $1.60/mile? I don't quiet understand the pay structure as you posted it. What is event pay?
Would I need to buy my own tank? -
I believe $1.60 is with the fuel surcharge . Recruiting ads say O/O's average gross was $120,000 last year . Event pay is stuff like detention time and layovers . You also get paid extra for using the pump or compressor . That's why you need to be real sure about this . You will have to have a 3" pump and auxiliary compressor installed on your truck . Our terminal ordered new trucks with heavy duty compressors from the factory so we don't need pto driven compressors . You don't have to buy a tank . Many tanks are dedicated and only carry 1 product . That's a big plus . Dedicated customers pay round trip . No deadhead or waiting for another load . You bring the empty back where you picked the load up .M.Enterprises Thanks this.
