How long has he been driving?
In case you are unaware, the DOT officer has a computer in his car...and on that computer is a map program. They can very easily punch in the names of the towns flagged on your log book to determine the mileage from one stop to the next....and compare that to your driving time between those two points....and decide if you've either been exceeding the speed limit or falsifying your log book. They will also look at the total number of miles driven during the day and the miles you claim to have driven that day and make the same calculation. If they really want to, they can compare the distance their computer is telling them it is from point A to B to C to wherever else you went that day to see if the mileage you are claiming you drove is in the right ballpark. They know they aren't likely to have the exact same mileage....but if you claim you only drove 200 miles and their computer is showing 500 miles they know something isn't right and you'll have some explaining to do.
As for fuel & toll receipts and other "supporting documents", if you have them in the truck you are supposed to hand them over. If you don't have them, there is nothing they can do because you aren't REQUIRED to carry them in the truck with you. You can tell them you don't have them, though...and as long as you stick to your story and don't give them a reason to get into your truck where they'd find the documents you claim you don't have, you're fine.

I've heard them say to someone else you are either getting a speeding ticket or a HOS violation which do you want cause I know you can't do what you said you did within the law!

I had a trainer when I first started driving that did receive a speeding ticket at the scales on the north side of the grapevine when they checked his logs.

Sometimes you can only sit for so long before you have to do what ya gotta do to make a paycheck. My mortgage company isnt going to understand HOS or care. But I do agree over all. Days are long enough , they dont need to be any longer than they have to be. Nights are short enough too. But sometimes , not always those nights are only naps.

That did not make Pat Quinn happy . He was ATA chairman at the time pushing for speed limiters on trucks . -
