I will be starting trucking school this month and will (hopefully) go OTR after graduation. I have been obsessively combing through the forums and am noticing a lot of traps a noobie wide-eyed driver can fall into. There literally is a daunting maze of regulations, fines, rip-off companies, leases, ect to navigate.
Please tell me you can make a living wage and that it's not all doom and gloom?,

Look around you, see all those big trucks going down the road? Most are taking home between $400-700 weekly. That said, it's a tuff lifestyle, too tuff for me. But it can be done.
-
Feel better now?
Don't be scared off by everything you see and hear about this job. But do try to pick up on what folks are talking about. Go into interviews with your mind and eyes and ears open.
You will likely be in a training program after school. Learn from it.
Good Luck! -
You can make decent money, but it is a tough lifestyle going OTR if you have family.
I'd advise staying away from company schools, and using other resources for obtaining training. Never get ####y or hurried past your capabilities, and you should do fine. -
Sure hope I bring in more than 400/week =\
-
Think Military Recruiter when you sit down with a company recruiter.
As a previous poster stated, it's not all gloom and doom.
If you bring home $500 a week over the next few months, consider yourself on pace. Especially with freight the way it is now. -
Danc,
So by "bring home $500", I hope you mean after taxes and health care?
Meaning net spendable money??
Grossing like $700 ? -
if you dont make 800+ dollars clear a week driving a truck then you are f**king up and doing something wrong.
-
During your training you are not going to make $800
-
From what I gather the best thing to do before getting into trucking is to get as financially prepared as you can because it may take a year or so before your better paying gigs will come along.
The way way I understand is that first year is all about getting the experience and keeping your record clean.
After that trucking can be a very rewarding career.
It's kinda like welding jobs some of them pay $10 p/h and others can pay up to $50 p/h.
