    Hey everyone,

So, I read somewhere (specifically CDX Learning Systems - Fundamentals of Medium/Heavy Duty Commercial Systems 2nd edition) that a truck does not require parking brakes on both axles if it is less than 52000 GVW and does need them on both if it’s over that.

Does anyone have any information in state law, FMCSR or otherwise that backs this up? Everywhere I look simply states that parking brakes are required on all axles no matter what.

    Thanks guys!

A big issue with only 1 axle having a parking brake is if a spring breaks or 1 brake is out of adjustment . You are now relying on 1 brake to hold all your weight. I don’t know the cost to upgrade to 2 axles but it would be worth it especially if you park on a icy slope.

Even adjusted, it doesn't take much slope to feel the need to set the trailer, too! I had a truck with 1 axle of spring brakes, and didn't like it one bit!
