Where can OTR drivers park when there is no Terminal/dropyard near their home and parking at their home is not an option?

    A truck stop?

Or perhaps you can make arrangements with a local grocery store, dept. store, mall, or wal-mart.

Or find a farmer with a good sized lot close to home. Offer to pay for parking. There are some places where they charge on a monthly scale. Even look for out door storage lots where people park their boats and RV's.

This is why I advocate not driving for a company not within easy driving distance from home so you can park and get in your car, P/U or on the bike and head home!

If you do pay above board and get a receipt then put it on your taxes!

You need to remember parking at a truck stop and taking up a "working mans" spot to go home for time off is in my opinion low class! I have 3 truck stops within 10 miles of my house. I never take up space in any of them! If you do go in and offer to pay for the spot. Remember they are there to MAKE money! That spot could be for a paid customer unless you fill those tanks all the way up to justify dropping the trailer there or truck and trailer. Make it worth the truck stops time to "store your stuff!" Ain't nothing free anymore!

I parked at a lot that charges me per night or by the month! But that only happened for one year when I drove for T/A! Don't ask and I won't lie to you why I drove for those losers! The other 2 companies was one 5.5 miles from my house and there for a while I was actually allowed to bob tail home as I paid the insurance until it went sky high then my P/u or bike were parked on the lot. The P/U got almost totaled by a freaking tornado and it wasn't even 1.5 years old! almost 8 years and the thing had to wait until I drove the P/U and not the bike! The bike stayed next to the building and would have been safe! God works in mysterious ways! Guess he didn't like the truck!

The other was 35 miles away and my P/U sat in the parking lot for free and under security cameras with a big ugly arsed dog as guard!

Look around. If you do get Farmer John to let you park assure him that if some moron breaks into the truck you won't hold him responsible.
Look under storage in the yellow pages and even truck parking.
Raleigh really does bite when it comes to truck stops! It's a big town so there has to be some place. Try at a trailer repair or thermo king but think security when you do! I had to go to court a few times years ago and trying to find a place to park was a PITA!

I called around up here. Prices were all over the map. Best I got was $50/mo for a slightly secure open lot (with a fenced gate). There are many large class A motorhomes and fancy boats, along with your assorted garbage. There is a boat parked there. Been there for 3 yrs. The trailer tires are 1/2 in the ground already. Owner told me he cant kick the guy out since he is paying each month. I figure eventually the boat will be BELOW ground and then the owner can sell another spot!

We negotiated a discount price if I paid in full at least for 6months. I figured they needed the income and I needed the parking. Its about as secure as I can get (PD said ZERO issues with the place) and I have locking fuel caps on the rig. I dont have a crossover tube to worry about some ###wipe slicing open at least...

Next best was a motel. Umm..oh yea... The "El Rancho Motel" on HWY 41 here. It's about as sleezy as you can get. The owner tells me she has had NO issues in all these years (as she stands behind 4" of bullet-proof glass). Offered me a parking space and even electrical hookup for the winter. $100/mo - no discounts even if prepaid for a year. Wanted my business but not bad enough and I really didnt envision parking my own rig there.

Put an add on Craigslist too. I did that. Ya I got some tosspots that called me back and thought that $125/mo for a parking space (U-Store-It lot) was a 'great deal'. Yea ok...

A farmer is a great idea, but around here...farms are turning into subdivisions.....so.....

When I lived down state, it could be hard to find a place to park. I asked a small company about parking there. The owner is a good guy, I know him, but he was full with his own trucks. He suggested a brickyard a mile from my house. $50 a month, not bad. Now I have a choice of a sawmill, feed mill, grocery store, and even a small company I used to drive for. Well, since I'm not on the road now, you could have my spots.:biggrin_25525:

Seriously though, ask around at places that have big trucks of their own, they likely could tell ya few, maybe even rent ya spot.:biggrin_25525:

I presume you will be a company driver? - Maybe check with them to make sure where your parking is OK (approved?) - and if your personally liable for any damage or vandalism to the P/U. Maybe it doesn't matter...but I was just thinking out loud here..Maybe i'm just talkin out my mouth...who knows..

I own my own rig, so I never have to answer to anyone but myself and perhaps the DOT/FMCSA/PD...umm.. well I guess I still do answer to many people one way or the other :biggrin_25521:
