Howdy everyone! This is a two part question: I am currently in the Navy and stationed in Maryland. I am looking to get my CDL when ever I get sometime to myself and go to school. I was curious to know if they have such a thing as night school for CDL classes. I understand I would need to do training during the day for day-time drives but I thought I would ask. Next question; once I get my CDL, I was curious to know if its common to get weekend runs as kind of a "part-time" gig or am I pissing into the wind? I've always wanted to be a trucker but the Navy kind of impeads that for now. Let me know what you guys think and if you know of a good school thats not a CDL mill, throw that in there too. Thanks guys!!

I have part-time runs available, so they are out there. Probably harder to find though.

There are a few positions that might be considered "part time". Some carriers at some terminals have "casual driver" positions which often involve local/regional operations. But coming in with no experience, your options will be further limited until you gain 12+ months experience.
If your in Oklahoma, knock on some oilfield related doors as they can relax requirements sometimes to fill needs. -

federal regulations state all on duty time whether a carrier or not. if you receive compensation you must log as on duty. see question 11Skip1965 Thanks this. -
I've seen them out there too. Just harder to find...
All depends on the runs the truck owner has. -
Ive seen part time weekend runs ect advertised but whether for new drivers not sure...Night truck school I doubt it

DO NOT go into trucking. Low pay, poor working conditions that have a negative effect on your health. Use your benefits to go to college for a job in engineering, nursing, accounting, or something else worth while.
Just my two-cents of advice after 35 years of trucking hell!Skip1965 Thanks this. -
There's lots of local part time stuff around the airport here, same to be said with rail heads. As others said, it's out there you just need to find it, and be willing to work "off" normal hours, outside of 9-5 Monday-Friday.

IT2, You did not say when you get off active duty (??).
I think you will find your first (And biggest) hurdle is going to get the Navy to sign off on your plans to drive part time as long as you are on active duty. Your command may be lenient on those things, but from my experience in the Navy, I know it can be next to impossible to get permission from the Navy to take on outside employment.
CDL school is another story; they won't have a problem with it in most cases. Look at community colleges in your area.
Also, once you get off active duty, DO NOT use your Post 9/11 GI bill to get a CDL as it can prevent you from using them to get a degree later if driving does not work out for you (It does NOT work out for most).
Good luck -
Seen weekend classes advertised somewhere, but not night classes.
I guess it could happen though..
