Are there any o/o's-independents out there that truck part of the year and what companies let you lease on a part time basis. Also what is involved as far as insurance,permits etc.

i guess i could be considered part time. i haul trees from sep.-dec. & feb.-to may.the rest of the time i work with my dad & son looking after our cattle & hay operation. i have my own authority so that makes it a little easier. as far as insurance goes it comes around every month,i just have to set aside enough income in the fall & spring to pay for it when im not running.

I'm considering sort of doing this, and landstar is extremely flexible...they mostly let you do your own thing....
I'm going to be washing windows and power washing and part time trucking in the summer, and mostly full time in the winter....
just dont have payments on a truck LOL.. -
I'm leased to a company and usually run for 4 weeks, taking the weekends off during that stretch, then take a full week off. I still have to pay my insurance for the week I take off but it only cost $60 a week and they just take it out of the following settlement. With your own authority or an outfit like Landstar you can take off whenever you want and whenever you decide. I dont dont have that much freedom I have to give notice when I want to take off so I typically schedule my weeks off far in advance with my dispatcher so it's in the computer and not a surprise. It works really well for me. I second the "do it without a payment" comment. If you have any kind of truck payment much more than about $200 a week you'll be a slave to the bank and your weeks off will be few and far between.

I like the independant way to operate. If you're getting your own loads or running with landstar, like, im in mississippi right now, lets say i'm getting pissed off at driving and now i see a load for $3 going home to south bend, indiana (shorter deadhead than delivering in michigan lol). I could just go home with no notice at all, when i feel like it. I think that would be really neat to do.
When you're with a regular company, you have to tell them in advance when you want home and they'll try to get you home on time and they dont give you a lot of choices in general. So i might end up going home for $1.50 a mile 2 days later....
Check into everything to save money. For example, landstar provides illinois plates at $1500 a year. I'm preetttty sure michigan is only $1200, so in that case...
I'm only paying $1750 for my tractor....hehehehehehehe.... -

I don't know what kind of companies you guys are leased to but if its YOUR truck run where and when YOU want and go home when YOU want.....
and for the record Landstar doesn't care what you do with your truck provided you are complliant, thats the way it should be.......just say'n -

It's an 82 Mack cabover. And yeah, I'm not sure if i can handle it OTR. Not sure if even want to be an o/o. But I am definitely buying it. I was thinking about making it into a very large van to drive around town and piss on all these idiots with escalades, etc. Similar fuel milage but BIGGER! I even thought up how to keep the cab tiltable...
