Let me start off by saying I'm a military man, but while still in the military, i would like to start a side business by driving otr. My plan is to buy a used truck (after getting my license), and when i take vacations or pcs, etc to haul loads to my destination by using those load websites.

The reason I'm looking at this too is because i love driving, when I drove 25,000lbs from wa to fl, i loved it, and that's how i came up with this.

I'm just looking for thoughts from experienced guys, thanks.

Part time driving still requires full time authority, permits, taxes, and insurance most of all. So as a new business and a new driver. Plan to spend around $2-3k per month while truck sits. So in turn. No. You will be broke before you even get your first payment from a broker. 30 days usually btw

Just so you have an idea how much you will be paying for your part time insurance, call several agents and ask how much your annual premium will cost. Seriously, ....call

What if I rent from Penske. For example, I am going on leave from FL to NY, and find a load that needs to go up in that direction, rent a tractor from penske and take the load, as long as the pay from the load outweigh the cost of renting the truck. What do you think?

Got this off the Penske site:

Can I tow my own trailer behind a Penske truck?
No. For liability reasons and your safety, we do not allow customers to tow any non-Penske owned equipment behind our trucks.

Please forgive me for my ignorance, I am just doing my research. Understood on the whole penske thing. I am just trying to figure a way to make this work, because its something ive always wanted to do, be it a tourist (as someone already called it), or what have you, but i'm looking at directfreight.com and I'm from NY, and I see one load's payrate is $4000.00 just to go up. After subtracting the operating costs, theres a profit in there.

Is there anyway to make something like this feasible?

Even renting a truck when you need it, you would still have to have your own authority. That means liabulity insurance 100% of the time.

You have 2 have operating authority. Dot and mc numbers. Ifta sticker(fuel tax), 2290 heavy use tax, and your truck registered 4 every state your first year. Plus the fact that even if you went and did everything correctly. Still aren't guaranteed 2 even get a decent load because your authority is new and some people won't deal with you period. Being honest there is no way 2 make this work. Not at all. Wouldn't even recommend this route if you were going full time. You need 2 get a cdl and drive 4 a company 4 a year or 4 and learn the business, the rules, and then decide. It's a tough trade business wise, much less you have the responsibility of a 80k vehicle which once mistake kills. Not just a fender bender

It's not going to work...there is way to make it work unless you are very wealthy. It costs way to much to have a truck sitting around doing nothing.
