I'm trying to transition into a new career that offers me more earning potential as well as a more flexible schedule. However it takes a long time to get the commission checks coming in. So I need to do what I'm already trained to do to make money to cover my bills and expenses in the meantime. However I also need to be able to work my new hustle simultaneously. So I can't be in the Permian basin on a 3 week hitch, can't be out on the big road for weeks or be doing 14 hour shifts in a day cab 6 days a week. I'm starting to think that the only way to pull this off is just keep living full time in the truck as that seems to be the only option while stacking cash until I have enough to ride out a few months while burning a ton of gas doing my new hustle that will ultimately make me a lot more money while allowing me to make my own schedule.

Burning a lot of gas? Sounds like a door to door salesman. Tell me that ain’t it.
As for part time, staffing services would be your best bet, or an outfit that needs an on call driver like Penske.

Well, the average income for a truck driver in my area is $50k a year. The average income for roofing sales in my area is $101k a year. Of course those are averages meaning that half earn more and half earn less. That means the less successful roof salesmen are doing better than the more successful truck drivers. I was was able to get 2 contracts signed in one day. About 50% fall through due to insurance not wanting to cover it so that 1 contract that will go through once the job is done in 30 to 45 days pays a $4000 commission. So let's say I take it slow and only sign 2 contracts a week and half of them fall through do to the insurance denying the claim how much money is that? More than the top earning truckers wildest dreams isn't it?

That one day where I was able to sign 2 contracts was also a 5 hour day with a lunch break in that time. I was also out in the worse area at the worse time. A working class neighborhood mid day on a weekday meaning most people weren't even home. Yet I STILL got 2 contracts signed. One of those will pay me more money than 2 weeks on the road keeping my left door closed and racking up miles. A good driver getting good runs can make $1,800 a week.

Awesome, thank you. Also to @lual and @LoneRanger I really appreciate the feedback. I didn't think to call to temp agencies but that's a good idea and a tremendous lifesaver. I knew I liked you guys for a reason.

I figured somewhere out there with as big of a forum as this is there's probably some retired truck driver out there who still likes to hop in the cab once in awhile to relive his glory days. I just wanted to find out how he does it.

$4,000 commission on 1 roof? What was it? The roof over Cowboys Stadium?
