signage may be provided by the trucking company, you will need a cb radio set up. depending on where you will travel, you will need a overnighter bag, toilletreis, etc, etc,,,and spending money, to eat, maybe get a motel room.FlaSwampRat Thanks this. -
You do the quick and easy course, write the test and pass it of course. Then it depends on where you are working as a pilot car aka escort driver for. I have portable signs, lights, radios etc I let them use, and we just suction cup it to the roof or tie it on, run a wire in the passenger window you leave down1/8" for the wire and plug it into the cigarette lighter. The radio battery will last all day and just recharge it at night. I also have four vehicles set up as dedicated escort vehicles, and often hire drivers for them. Biggest thing is to have a vehicle with decent fuel range, because the truck doesn't want to have to wait for you at a gas station every 2 hours, but most can easily drive 4 plus hours, so not a concern. Carry emergency supplies incase you get stranded somewhere, and always pack for at least a two nights stay away, even if its not planned. If i tell people to plan on being away three nights, pack for 5 just incase.
Buy a case of water, some snacks, and anytime the trucker stops to pee you better try to yourself even if you don't think you need to. Want to annoy people ask for a pee break 2 hours later because you didn't go when the convoy stopped. Put the gas for your vehicle on a credit card, and keep the proof for a tax write off. You will need to get special insurance on your vehicle, but most people tell me it only adds about $20 a month to their insurance. If you live or will be going to where it snows carry tire chains for all 4 corners, and know how to put them on. A reliable vehicle is a must. A gal who regularly pilots for me she has 2 vehicles, her daily driver, and a small suv she uses as her dedicated pilot vehicle, she leaves all her gear, chains etc in it. She does nothing else for work but pilot car, and makes clear, two times as much now as she did in her previous career as a school teacher. I have a trip planned for next week, two pilot cars, three days, two nights away, both escort vehicles are hires i use regularly, it is actually a mother and daughter team. They make really good money, share a motel room for extra savings, and love what they do. Biggest thing is too watch your spacing, and never hold the truck up, or get too far away. Listen to the radio carefully for instructions, but don't say much unless it has to be said. Oh and i forgot, carry some basic tools, tape, wire etc and two spare tires. -
Its not a pilot car but, I drive OTR part time for Venture Express. I have been with them for almost a year. Only part time I could find in trucking, in my area. They only require you to do two runs a month. 50 cents a mile and you still get safety and performance bonus. However, no benefits, holiday pay, or vacation. Which is understandable seeing you only have to run two runs a month. Although, your performance bonus will never max out because of part time miles. Still a xtra $200-$350 a month. I was running Canton MS to El Paso Tx once a week. 2122 miles 6 stops 3 1/2 days to run. Off the rest of the week. Or could skip some weeks. They paid $25 xtra per stop. $1161.00 gross a week plus the 200-350 once a month. You could run more some weeks or less. They have shorter routes with only one stop. Up to you. They have terminals around the Nashville TN area. Would help with being in a band. Just food for thought.
