Passed TMC's 3-week CDL orient, today I head out for OTR training

I primarily use my onboard Navigo (Qualcomm). Use Rand McNally Overdryve 8" as a supplement, and bought an iPad mini to run Trucker Path to see construction/road closures that may along my Rand or Navigo route (neither provide construction/closure info) as well as weigh stations and flying J/Pilots.

That's pretty good. You don't have the new iPad they issue?

 

The tablet they issue is an android and I'll likely get it in ~2 weeks when I go in for my next service.

 

Ah. Well that's good. They claim you can use it's wifi. Then stream your tv if you watch tv

I have my own mobile hotspot in the truck that gives me unlimited (never throttled) 4G (where available) via ATT for $30/month. The best money I spend. I have my Rand GPS, iPad, Macbook, phone, and TV connected to it 24x7. I also have a satellite in the truck which I only use for Adult Swim.

I am new to all this and I need to go sometime this week to get my learners permit. The apllication said something about TWIC. Not sure what I need to do for that or if I just get it at a later time.

 

You can get it at a later time, do it the same time/place you run your hazmat background check.
