    I am located in IL.

I am working, by myself, towards getting a class A CDL. To that end, I have passed written tests (general, air brakes, combinations).

Now I am facing a driving test. There is a company out there that is renting a 6 wheel dump truck, with AIR BRAKES, and a trailer, with ELECTRIC BRAKES.

According to the person renting it, this is a combination that would get me a class A without restrictions.

Is this, in fact, correct, for Illinois specifically?

    Thanks

I may be wrong, but the way I remember it, if you don't take the test in a tractor trl combination with a 5th wheel you will have a no 5th wheel restriction.

It should meet the requirements, but it is up to the examiner at the location you test at.

I would think you would qualify for a class B with a pintle hook endorsement with a max. weight restriction.
(not sure what weight limit would be)

A dump truck is licensed for 56,000 lbs and a trailer if licensed for 15,000 and he meets the requirement for a Class A CDL with Air Brakes in Illinois.

Class A can be achieved with as little as 26,000 with the proper equipment.

    RickG Thanks this.

Maybe going down to your local DMV and asking them your question would be the smart thing to do. Asking here will get you a 100 different answers, and probably none of the correct.

It matters not what they are licensed for, rather what they are rated for. For example if your dump truck has a GVWR of 56000 and tlr has a GVWR of 15000 the GCWR would be 71,000 and therefore a Class A.

Actually the GCWR has to reach 26,001 to be a class A.(With trailer GVWR over 10,000)

Depending on the weight ratings it may or may not. But considering that the weight ratings would get you the cass A, if you test in a non fifth wheel combination the state must show on your CDL that you are restricted from operating a TT combination connected with a fifth wheel.

Concerning your air brake tractor and electric brake trailer. The tractor controls (So to speak). As long as the tractor operates totally on air brakes (IE air/hydraulics would cause a restriction) electric trailer brakes would not cause a restriction.

    Best regards

Never seen such a restriction in our state.
