On I-80 in Iowa, there is a construction zone starting at about the 242 mile marker and ending at about the 248. I was westbound through this last night. Between the 246 and 245, the Jersey wall had been moved to allow a single lane of traffic to the left, into the work area. This was because there was a crane in the right lane fishing an overturned truck out of the ditch. Immediately past the crane was another Big Truck being put on a hook. I have no idea what the company name was on the overturned truck and, while I did see the names on the one being towed, it is not relevant.
Listening to chatter on the radio, the truck being removed from that 20-foot drop was the third truck in four days that had gone off the road in that same spot. At least one of the drivers did not make it. This is per the local guy who goes through there twice each day. When I saw the undercarriage of that truck, it felt like somebody kicked me in the belly.
This construction zone is set up so that the right lane is big enough for a truck, plus 4 to 6 inches on each side. There is about an 18-inch right shoulder, which then drops sharply. The left lane starts about 3 inches from the Jersey wall. I had to get into that lane so traffic from the on-ramp had somewhere to merge to. I was squeezed as close to the barrier as I dared to be and my right tires were still in the right lane...by about 4 inches.
It is a 55mph maximum zone with a minimum speed of 45mph.
With this information, 90% of people will come to the same conclusion I did: the truck in the ditch was in the right lane, maybe going 55, maybe a little slower. Someone else (perhaps the truck being hooked up-it did not appear to be damaged) just couldn't stand going that speed for six or seven miles and decided to pass in this construction zone. Since the left lane isn't wide enough for a truck, the guy in the right lane felt "pushed" and edged toward the right side of his lane. He may have gone just barely close enough to the edge for the lip of the road to catch his right steer...and all of us have experienced what happens next. It sucked him right off the road. I hope that driver is okay.
Iowa kind of messed this one up. There isn't enough room for trucks to pass eachother, but we all know they will anyway. I think maybe a single wider lane might be a better idea through there, rather than trying to maintain two lanes of traffic. Some of us get into a big hurry. 55mph is aggravating and tiresome. There are those among us who would pass in this situation. We've all seen them every day. They get this idea that the extra 30 seconds to get through that construction zone will cause them to be late. Well, I'm not going into the "she coulda done this or he shoulda done that" discussion.
I'm only going to state what my plan is when passing through this or any similar construction zone that has such a narrow left lane. My plan is to straddle the lanes going through and take all the cussing and finger-waving at the other end....because I will be alive to enjoy it and the person waving that bird at me will not have my death on his conscience. I will do the upper speed limit and move way right at the other end to let you by. I just don't feel the need to be run off the road in that section of road....like what has happened three times in four days.

I think you can take it off and put on your regular, lightweight, summer-duty Swift coveralls now. No reason for anybody to flame you over that. I'm sure you're right and you'll get it over the radio, though. But....f'em - as you put in a more polite way. Good post.

As I was reading this post, I was already thinking this, and have done it in the past. I too, would rather be cussed out and flipped off then to lay the truck over in a ditch or end up with a side swipe incident.

Hi, very good post, boy i make a great swift driver then cause i've been flipped finger's at so many time, truck's running up my dot bumper cause i'm doing the speed limit thru school zone's, i love kids . dont need a bunch under my front bumper thankyou , just cause that 18 wheeler pushing me too go fast, so what i do them people who brown nose, i dont care anymore, i dont care were i'm at , if theres a lane opean too the left , i keep going slower en slower till they get the idea , go around blowing there horns and flipping me off, dont care at lest i'm alive and my cargo is safe, that one driver musta been on crack, cause i got clear down too 10 and he still follwed me for 3 miles, what a moron, i but when i go thru the cont zones i always straddel the lane if narrow and i dont care at lest i lived anthor day , unlike that driver in chicago at the bottom when they did that , plenty room too pass , i was doing my thing going slow then were it came back too 80 it narrow real quik , he ran out of real estate, cut me off, i hit the brakes, he went straight in front me at such a angle he couldnt bring it back, went down the dicth or what was at that time, mud flying everwear , just too much speed for the zone , i didnt even stop , i couldnt or would cause more wrecks,

thank you for the post, sometimes you just need to do the right thing and let others hate you for it.
Injun, Everett, CertifiedSweetie and 1 other person Thank this. -
That's true. I've pretty much always had fast trucks, but I never have #####ed at a driver for going slow if he/she wasn't comfortable in an area like a construction zone. Sometimes they'll get on the radio and apologize, but I usually back off and tell them, "Just do what you gotta do, driver."
If everybody would really focus on their own safety, we could almost eliminate human-error accidents. -
There is no need for anyone to pass in a construction zone period !
If you are in that big of a hurry you should have left before you did.
When did doing the speed limit become a crime ?
Slowing down to 45 or 55 for even 10 miles wont make a difference at the end of your 11 hr shift!
Heck even driving 55 for 4 hours wont be that big of a deal at the end of the day/week/month/year.
I see it every day the same truck will pass me 3 times while I just chug along at the posted speed limit .
You will find the stress level really drops when you stop trying to be the first one there!!!
But as I am often reminded I will drive truck you drive yours and we will let the lawyers sort it out . -
I think any zone like this needs to have signs for truck lane control, stay in lane signs, and no passing signs.
This way when some dumb ### decides that they cannot slow down to an appropriate speed for several miles and does something dumb like that, they will get the full book thrown at them.
Sure, the lanes should be a little wider.
But the passing truck needs to take full responsibility for any damage they cause. Also the ramps most likely have stop signs on them. So if a car runs out and does not merge correctly it needs to be 100% their fault when they get rear ended due to failing to yield.formertaxidriver, Everett, Saddle Tramp and 2 others Thank this. -
Totally agree Injun, I was just through there, thats exactly what I did. lol Better safe than sorry.
Injun Thanks this.
